Kentucky Derby Odds 2012: Smart Horses You Must Take
Betting on horses makes horse racing that much more compelling, especially at the Kentucky Derby. The favorites tend to fall flat, while underdogs seem to rise. Which horses should you place a bet on?
Here are some smart choices you must take.
Take Charge Indy (15-to-1)
Calvin Borel is riding Take Charge Indy at 15-to-1 odds. Does that name sound familiar?
Even to the most basic horse racing fans in the world, that name should sound familiar. Borel has won the Kentucky Derby three times in the past five years. Simply amazing.
Even though this is a different horse to climb upon, don't discount Borel's knowledge of the track, his ability to strive through adversity and the likelihood of him finishing strong down the stretch.
Hansen (10-1)
Hansen's owners have said that their two-year-old colt has the energy to run the entire race at high and consistent speeds.
With a smaller build, that's the question for Hansen.
Hansen will be just fine at 10-to-1 odds from the No. 14 post position. He'll start and finish strong.
Union Rags (9-to-2)
Union Rags is one of the best horses in the world. His talent level is enough to win the Kentucky Derby. But he has failed to live up to expectations before, so will that trend continue?
That's the real question.
Another major concern is his inside post position at No. 4. It's going to be extremely difficult to stave off the post-position horses.
We'll find out if Union Rags can turn to riches when Saturday is all said and done.
Prediction: Even though I refuse to overlook Calvin Borel, my pick for the 2012 Kentucky Derby is Hansen. He'll prove that his energy can be sustained throughout the race.
