Donald WoodMay 5, 2012

The 2012 Kentucky Derby post positions have been drawn, and it’s time to prepare for the madness that is Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs.

With the odds up to date and the favorites finding their way to the top of the betting pool, there are certain horses you want to avoid and others you want to go all-in on.

All of the following horses will be towards the front when all is said-and-done, but only one will come out on top. Choose wisely and good luck.

4. Union Rags—9/2

Union Rags is an amazing story, but the dream journey to stardom will continue with a great showing at the Kentucky Derby. With a great post at No. 4, if Union Rags can get out of the gate clean and stay out of traffic, this will the his race to lose.

6. Bodemeister—9/2

There are differing opinions on how much influence trainers really have on horses, but there is no coincidence that guys like Bob Baffert keeping showing up with winners like Bodemeister.

Bodemeister and Union Rags are 1A and 1B.

15. Gemologist—13/2

Another case of having the right leadership, veteran trainer Todd Pletcher will try to help Gemologist race to the win from the No. 15 post. As hard as that will be (only three horses in history have ever done it), the horse has the pedigree and training to shock the field.
