The Friday Tweetbag: The AFC South Looks to Improve

Nate DunlevyJun 7, 2018

Welcome to the Friday Tweetbag! As always, you can tweet, email or send your questions to me in the comments section of the articles.

Q:

A: The best way to open up an offense is to get dynamic quarterback play. That's why I believe it's so critical that Jake Locker win the starting job. I'm not a big believer in offensive line play. I know the interior of the Titans' line was bad (especially at center), but linemen can be found late in the draft and after the draft.

I think they did the smart thing by taking Wright. He was a good value, and he helps give the Titans an offensive identity. They'll do well to run less and throw more, and between Britt, Washington, Cook and Wright, the Titans should have no problem fielding a formidable offense.

Q:

A: There are a lot of candidates. Ben Ijalana would be a great pick, because if he can become a starter and play well, the Colts are set at tackle for a long time. Austin Collie and Jerraud Powers need to be healthy as well.

The real answer is a trick, however. Tom Zbikowski wasn't on the team last year, but he's the player that most needs to improve to give Indy a shot. Antoine Bethea did his best to hold down the fort in the defensive secondary, but he couldn't do it alone. Zbikowski has been brought in, presumably to be a starting safety. He's never started more than six games in a year, mostly making his bones as special-teams ace.

Now that he's a starter, he has to raise his game. If he can be a strong player for the Colts, the defense stands a fighting chance. If he does not, nothing Chuck Pagano does will help. Safety play is too important to the overall integrity of a pass-stopping unit.

Q:

A: I loved the Texans' draft, and they are the favorites to win the South. I still don't think they'll have quite the same defensive production, and the offense has fault lines. Posey is an interesting pick up in the third round, but he probably won't help right away. They are going to need great play from their biggest star for 16 games if they want to repeat.

I honestly believe that if Schaub and Johnson can make it to January 100 percent, the Texans have as good of a chance as any team in a horribly depleted AFC.

Can they win the Super Bowl? Maybe. Can they make the Super Bowl?

Definitely.
