Mayweather vs. Cotto Undercard: Fighters You Need to Watch

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

While most of the attention will be on Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto on Saturday at the MGM Grand, there are still some intriguing names fighting in the undercard.

From up-and-comers to an aging veteran battling on, there are some interesting boxers gearing up for the bright lights.

Here's a look at three fighters you need to watch in Saturday's undercard.

3. Jessie Vargas (18-0)

Jessie Vargas vs. Steve Forbes should be another mismatch. Vargas was going to fight Alfonso Gomez, but now he's stuck fighting Forbes.

Vargas doesn't do anything spectacular, but he's a good, all-around boxer and has a warrior's mentality—as he showed against Lanardo Tyler. He's also a protege of Mayweather.

Forbes is a decent boxer, but he's vastly undersized at welterweight and he has very little power. He's coming off two straight losses, including a TKO against Karim Mayfield.

2. Shane Mosley (46-7-1)

Shane Mosley has fallen on hard times in the past three years. While Bernard Hopkins has been able to fight well into his 40s, Mosley, who turns 41 in September, has not.

Mosley does have power, but it's been tempered throughout the years. He also doesn't have the speed he used to. His body is beginning to break down and he's not been able to sustain the same kind of punishment that he once did.

Still, you watch and hope he has something left in the tank. While he doesn't resemble a top boxer these days, it's hard to forget some of the victories he had in his career.

1. Saul Alvarez (39-0-1)

It would be a shock if Saul Alvarez didn't defeat Shane Mosley at this point in Mosley's career.

Mosley is old. Alvarez is 21 years old and has gone unbeaten in 40 career fights. He's also the WBC light middleweight champion and he has 29 knockouts to his name.

Alvarez is untested against top competition, but Mosley isn't exactly top competition at this point.

Alvarez is being pegged as a future star. He has good hand speed and obviously has knockout power. This is the biggest fight of his career, but it won't be particularly impressive if he defeats Mosley.
