Kentucky Derby 2012 Post Time: Complete Schedule of This Year's Race
Which horse should earn your bets for this year's Kentucky Derby?
Well, the jury's still out on that. But with only a few hours remaining until the Churchill Downs action unfolds, there's still time to make your selections.
The 20 contenders will take off at 6:24 p.m. ET, and currently, the odds favor Bodemeister (4-1), who will take off from post position No. 6, followed by Union Rags (9-2), who will be right ahead of him at position No. 4.
But something seems to suggest that the winner of this year's race won't be one of the highly-regarded front-runners.
In a year when the field was so wide open that even oddsmaker Mike Battaglia seemed bewildered when faced with the task of determining a favorite, gamblers could be just as well-served to put their money on Gemologist, Hansen or Take Charge Indy.
Battaglia even told the Associated Press' Colin Fly that he's still uncertain Bodemeister is the true favorite, and if the horse had drawn the first or second posts, it would've bumped Union Rags into the favorite slot. Battaglia said, "I wanted to make them co-favorites. I haven't been this close on two horses since Curlin and Street Sense [in 2007]. I wanted to make them co-favorites and I didn't. They went off 10 cents apart."
Still, Bodemeister will have to overcome 130 years of history to win this year's Derby—the last time a horse that went unraced as a two-year-old won, it was 1882—and Union Rags sniffs out trouble when starting on the inside.
Gemologist is the next best bet. Despite the fact that he's undefeated, he's been criticized for being untested in his wins—and he's starting from position No. 15.
There's Dullahan, who has 8-1 odds and drew the No. 5 position, which has produced eight total Derby Winners and four in the last 20 years. He could be a good bet. And then there's Hansen, who has $1.5 million in earnings and is coming off a win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile but drew post No. 14, which hasn't produced a winner in 51 years.
There are no right or wrong answers yet, and even the safest bets aren't that safe. The best bet? Go with your gut and hope for the best at 6:24.
