Kentucky Derby Post Positions 2012: Bodemeister's Sixth Position Won't Doom Him

Bodemeister will start the Kentucky Derby in the middle of the pack, but he won't stay there. As has been the case with Bob Baffert's colt, he will show and prove in crunch time.

Some could argue that he could get lost in the initial crowd of thoroughbreds, subsequently falling too far behind to make his move at the end.

Some credence is added to that argument because Bodemeister has been closer to the outside in his two previous wins. The fear is that running inside, the speed of Trinniberg and Creative Cause could beat Bodemeister down.

I don't think that will be the case.

The best quality Bodemeister has exhibited is his ability to rise to the occasion. Is the Kentucky Derby field the best he has ever competed against?

Of course it is, but he has handled an increase in competition well so far.

His win at the Arkansas Derby was against Grade I horses. He didn't just finish first; he annihilated the competition. Bodemeister took the race by nine-and-a-half lengths.

As he crossed the finish line, he seemed to be gaining speed. The race before that at San Felipe, Bodemeister finished second, on a shorter track and against a Grade II field.

He has been progressing consistently. That tells me that he hasn't peaked yet and that his best race could be forthcoming.

Some horses have the talent, and they produce in the moment. I think Bodemeister is that kind of horse. 

An inside starting position won't stop this horse from shining on Saturday. He has a feel for the moment, speed and the acceleration to make the Derby his personal showcase.
