Kentucky Derby Odds 2012: Horses Helped Most by Post Positions
With the 2012 Kentucky Derby posts officially drawn, the contenders' odds have already begun to shift around.
The two biggest favorites—Bodemeister and Union Rags—are still the favorites, but a few horses are closing fast before race day even gets here.
Here's a look at those helped most by their post positions.
Dullahan
Jack Telias of Sporting News writes, "A whoop went up in the Secretariat Room at Churchill Downs when Dullahan drew post five."
Why? He quotes trainer Dale Romans saying, "It’s a great post. It’s one of the winningest posts in Derby history."
Dullahan's odds have been moving since they opened and with the fifth post they've moved again from 10:1 to 8:1 (he was 12:1 earlier in the week, according to Sportsbook.com).
There's only problem with Dullahan: He's 0-3 at Churchull Downs.
Hansen
Another horse who has moved dramatically is Hansen, who was 14:1 just yesterday before the post drawing. Ironically enough, he landed with post 14 and Telias quotes oddsmaker Mike Battaglia and writes:
""Post 14 was a perfect post for (Hansen),” Battaglia said, recalling the Gotham Stakes, March 3 at Aqueduct, when Hansen broke from an outside post, was able to be rated, and won impressively.
"
Hansen is down to 10:1 and he'll continue to move down as race day approaches.
Gemologist
The undefeated colt wasn't necessarily helped, but he wasn't hurt either.
He drew the 15th post, just outside of Hansen, and saw his odds move from 7:1 to 6:1 in the process.
He'll be away from all the action early on the inside and should be able to make his move when he wants.
