Champions League Final: 10 Fascinating Stats

Michael CummingsJun 7, 2018

The Champions League final is still a couple weeks away, so to pass the time we've compiled 10 fascinating stats about the game.

Here's what you already know: Bayern Munich will host Chelsea in the final on May 19 at Munich's Allianz Arena. For UEFA's sponsorship purposes, the stadium will be called Fußball Arena München that day.

And you probably know that Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben played for Chelsea from 2004-07.

Bayern are seeking their fifth European title, and Chelsea have never won Europe's top prize. Bayern's most recent appearance in the final came in 2010; Chelsea's was in 2008 (both lost).

The two teams have met just twice before, with both teams winning once in the two-legged 2005 Champions League quarterfinal.

Now, here are 10 stats you might not be so familiar with.

Finals in Munich, Pt. I

1 of 10

Both an English club and a German club have won European Cup/Champions League titles in Munich. Neither of our finalists have done so.

In 1979, Nottingham Forest of England defeated Malmo of Sweden, 1-0, in the old European Cup final in Munich's Olympiastadion.

And in 1979, Borussia Dortmund of Germany (pictured) defeated Juventus of Italy, 3-1 in the Champions League final, also at Munich's Olympiastadion.

Finals in Munich, Pt. II

2 of 10

Bayern Munich won one European final that involved a home game in Munich.

The 1996 UEFA Cup final was a two-legged affair. Bayern defeated Bordeaux 2-0 at home in the first leg (at the Olympiastadion) and won the second leg 3-1 in France.

Good Omen

3 of 10

Bayern Munich defeated Real Madrid in the semifinals this season.

As Opta pointed out, that's a good sign for Bayern.

Attacking on the Left

4 of 10

According to WhoScored.com, 40 percent of Bayern's attacks this season have come from the left side. That's more than either the middle or the right.

Chelsea's favorite side is also the left, with 37 percent of their attacks coming from that side.

Champions?

5 of 10

Neither finalist will win their domestic league this season.

Bayern will finish second in the Bundesliga behind Borussia Dortmund, and Chelsea are currently sixth in the English Premier League.

The last time neither Champions League finalist won their domestic league in the same season they reached the final was 2007.

AC Milan (pictured) defeated Liverpool in the final that season.

Possession, Pt. I

6 of 10

Chelsea have held 56 percent of all possession in their league matches this season.

Bayern have held 64 percent.

Possession, Pt. II

7 of 10

Chelsea rank just 21st this season in Champions League possession percentage.

The Blues have held the ball only 44.9 percent of the time, less than CSKA Moscow, Basel, Trabzonspor and Shakhtar Donetsk.

Bayern Munich rank seventh with 56.2 percent of possession in all their Champions League matches.

Gomez's Goals

8 of 10

Mario Gomez has been a scoring machine for Bayern, scoring 12 times in the Champions League this season.

Only Lionel Messi (14) has scored more.

Gomez has registered two hat-tricks for Bayern in the Champions League this season.

He completed a first-half hat-trick at home against Napoli in the group stage and scored four at home to Basel in the Round of 16.

He also scored a brace at home to Manchester City in the group stage.

Only two of Gomez's 12 Champions League goals have come away from home.

Passing

9 of 10

According to WhoScored.com (click the "Passing" tab, then sort by clicking "Avg P") neither team has a player ranked in the top 10 for passes completed per game in the Champions League this season.

Bayern captain Philipp Lahm ranks 11th with 73.5 per game.

Chelsea's top passer, according to these stats, is David Luiz, with 50.2 per game, good for 57th.

Precedent

10 of 10

Three teams have played home games in the Champions League/European Cup final.

Two won, and the other lost on penalties.
