Kentucky Derby 2012 Post Positions: Which Horses Now Have an Advantage?

Daniel KockJun 7, 2018

The Kentucky Derby 2012 field is set and post positions have been handed out, which gives some horses an advantage and puts others at a disadvantage.

The field is deep for this event and there is not a clear favorite heading into the race, which makes the post positioning even more intriguing.

It is no secret that no jockey wants to hold posts 1, 2 or 20. Daddy Long Legs, Optimizer and Liaison hold those spots and all are at best 30/1 favorites to win the race.

Also, no horse has won from post 19 going back to 1970. I'll Have Another is a middle-of-the-pack contender, but is set at a 12/1 favorite, however.

Here's a look at some of the horses that had a fortunate drawing Wednesday.

Dullahan

One horse that has an advantage after the post drawings on Wednesday is Dullahan. Dullahan drew post five and is an 8/1 favorite heading into the Derby.

Post five has been one of the most successful posts over the last 20 years as four horses have won from that post.

Dullahan's trainer Dale Romans feels good about the drawing, and also likes his chances on Saturday.

Dullahan is the fourth highest betting favorite and will most likely stay back in the field at the start and make a charge later in the race.

Dullahan is a horse to watch on Saturday after the drawing of the successful No. 5 post for the race.

Hansen

Hansen will start from the No. 14 post on Saturday but was fortunate in falling in that spot.

With only two horses left to be drawn, Hansen and Daddy Long Legs, the No. 1 post was still available.

Hansen was the fortunate of the two as Daddy Long Legs got stuck with the No. 1 post.

Now, Hansen doesn't have to worry about being squeezed against the railing and has a solid post drawing in the middle of the pack.

Hansen is a 10/1 favorite for the Derby on Saturday after his post drawing.

Bodemeister

Bodemeister is the current odds on favorite for the Kentucky Derby 2012 at 4/1.

Bodemeister drew post six on Wednesday, which does not hinder the horses chances at winning the race.

Only one horse has won from the post in the last 40 years, but multiple have won from posts five and seven. That seems to indicate that the No. 6 post has simply not had the top contenders.

Once again, Bodemeister should feel fortunate not to have the inside post or the few on the far outside.

As a top contender, having the No. 6 post gives Bodemeister an advantage.
