Kentucky Derby 2012 Odds: Smart Bets to Make on Horses with Great Post Positions
The 2012 Kentucky Derby field is set and barring any late scratches, it should be the same at race time as it is now.
There are definitely some good values to be found now that we are no longer speculating on post position and other factors beyond the control of the bettor that could change the odds.
Let’s take a look at the 2012 field and pick out a few of the best horses with great positions.
Trinniberg – 50/1
This horse simply has speed. It remains to be seen if it can handle the 1 ¼ mile length of the track come race day at Churchill Downs.
If you believe Trinniberg can last that long at his high speeds (his farthest race is seven furlongs), he’s a great play.
This horse drew the No. 9 spot at the starting gate and should be just fine to explode from the middle of the pack out front.
Bettors against Trinniberg are hoping that he will slow down his pace and lose, but that remains to be seen.
Dullahan – 8/1
The No. 5 post position belongs to Dullahan and he’s going to capitalize on it.
His owners, trainers, jockey and fans are all excited that they received such a generous draw. One of the owners told the Des Moines Register,
"Where we are, with Bodemeister next to him and Take Charge Indy inside (Gate 2), two speed horses, there shouldn’t be any gate issues coming out sideways or whatever. We’ll probably have to show a little early foot down there, which is OK, and get up into position. After we didn’t get the 1 hole and the 16 through 20, anything that falls in there is A-OK.
"
Daddy Nose Best – 10/1
This pony was killing it during warmups over the past few days. He ran four furlongs in 49.23 seconds and looked extremely relaxed and casual in doing so. That has to give hope to his backers come race day.
What should also come as good news to his supporters is that Daddy Nose Best drew a solid No. 10 position at the starting line.
He’s a fast horse that can go for distance and now he’ll get a fair shake at winning this thing.
