Mayweather vs Cotto Predictions: Why Super Fight Was Great Choice for Money May

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

Outside of fighting Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather landed the perfect opponent for his May 5th super fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

This is an important bout for the undefeated Money. Not long after this fight, he is set to serve a 90-day jail sentence.

This means that the typically verbally active Money will not be able to slide his way into headlines and into the forefront of public consciousness. And that is a vital thing in boxing, where bigger hype equals bigger paydays.

Money will have to let this performance do his talking. And a win over the tough Miguel Cotto will do just that. Money didn't go for a cream puff opponent. He went for a deserving one.

Cotto Deserved This Fight

Cotto, 37-2, has had a great career, and he has earned the respect of fans in the process. He is a four-time world champion in three different weight divisions.

He is tough fighter who is never going to be questioned for lack of heart or preparation. He also has an elite resume.

At one point, Cotto was 32-0, and this was a fight everyone was screaming for.

Then, he ran into Antonio Margarito and what was likely his illegally wrapped fists. That brutal fight resulted in Cotto's first professional loss.

Cotto did not look like the same fighter when returned from that fight. He was still able to win his next two fights, but then was easily defeated by Manny Pacquiao.

He has looked better and better in his three fights (all wins) since Pacquiao. And he dominated his rematch with Margarito in their last bout.

Cotto is one of the best boxers on the planet, and it easy to feel good for him as he was presented with this epic opportunity.

The Pacquiao Comparison

The other reason this was a great choice for Money is that a victory will give his team ample ammunition to laying Money's claim to being the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet while Money is incarcerated.

Floyd has the defense that should allow him to avoid the brawling big hits of Cotto. If he fights his fight, he will cruise to an easy victory, and he will even have an outside shot of ending it quicker than the 12th round TKO that Pac-Man scored.

I can already see the propaganda emanating from his team now. "Money handled Cotto easier than Manny, and Cotto was in better shape than he was for that fight. And in case you haven't noticed, Pacquiao has not looked as good in recent bouts."

This will keep the Mayweather hype machine rolling right through his jail sentence, and crank up the pressure on Pac-Man to take something less than a 50-50 split for a fight with Money that everyone wants to see.
