NBA Awards 2012: MVP for LeBron James Would Be a Waste Without Title

Gabe ZaldivarMay 2, 2012

LeBron James should be the NBA MVP, but that is hardly the most important accolade heading into the end of the season.

The Miami Heat have dominated the early goings against the New York Knicks, and James is playing with swagger and unstoppable poise.

The NBA Awards are being released a little a time, with Gregg Popovich taking home Coach of the Year and Tyson Chandler taking the Defensive Player of the Year Award.  Many felt the latter award should have gone to King James, but not me.

If there is one acknowledgment that simply must be James', it's the MVP.

His 27.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.9 assists hardly tell the whole story, and neither does his mammoth 30.80 PER, which is much better than Kevin Durant's 26.26.

You need only to look to James' Game 1 thrashing of the Knicks to see how unbeatable the Heat can be when he is keyed into the task at hand.

The fact that James incorporates his teammates like no other superstar and still goes off for gaudy production is all I need to make him my presumptive MVP.

In case you can't tell, I like James and love what he has matured into this past season. The third MVP would bring him into some weighty company.

That brings me to my main point about another MVP trophy.

I would have to say, so what?

I don't care much for the award going to James unless it also comes with an NBA championship banner.

The Heat are playing like they are on a mission, and the season becomes an utter failure without cashing in on a title here and now. We can give James and his star-studded colleagues a pass on the, "Not two, not three..."

However, I must have one.

James can rack up shelves of MVP awards, but he will always be questioned about his legacy without one banner produced from his efforts.

He has the talent to be one of the best to ever play this game, but now he needs the rings. Watching the Heat dismantle the Knicks and doing the same in flashes this season to the rest of the league, I am convinced a look at a title doesn't get better than this.
