Kentucky Derby Odds: Latest Numbers for Bodemeister and More

Howard CowanJun 2, 2018

With the Kentucky Derby only three days away, Bodemeister and Union Rags have emerged as early favorites in the 138th "Run for the Roses."

Both three-year-old horses have posted impressive victories this year, with Bodemeister running away with the Arkansas Derby and Union Rags winning the Fountain of Youth at Gulfsteam Park.

Here are the current odds for the early favorites at this year's Derby.

Bodemeister: 4/1

Bodemeister is viewed as one of this year's favorites, not only because of his latest nine-and-a-half-length victory but also his impressive resume in 2012.

In four races, he has won two times and finished second twice.

With a win, Bodemeister would become the first horse since Apollo in 1883 to win the Derby and not race as a two-year-old.

Despite the history, Bodemeister will be ready come Saturday afternoon. Trainer Bob Baffert is a Kentucky Derby legend, with three wins under his belt and even more impressive performances.

Union Rags; 9/2

The other favorite is Union Rags, who is coming off a third-place finish at the Florida Derby. Although Union Rags didn't come out on top, he showed promise by finishing the race strong, running the last eighth of a mile in 6.37 seconds.

Union Rags also finished second in the Breeder's Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs in November.

He does have four career wins to his name, including wins at the Fountain of Youth and the Champagne Stakes.

Union Rags will be under the watchful eye trainer Michael Matz, who trained Derby winner Barbaro in 2006.

Gemologist: 6/1

Gemologist comes in as one of the hottest horses, with five wins in five career starts. If he wins, he will become just the eighth horse to win the Kentucky Derby while undefeated—the first since Big Brown did so in 2008.

The odds don't exactly stack in his favor, considering that, since 1900, 23 horses have entered undefeated and only seven have won.

Gemologist has been successful at Churchill Downs, winning twice. His latest win was at the Wood Memorial on April 7th, but he has not raced since.

Just like his horse, trainer Todd Pletcher comes in on a hot streak, winning 40 percent of his races at the Gulfsteam Park. Pletcher also trained 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver.
