Kentucky Derby Odds: Breaking Down 2012's Darkhorses
Heading into the 2012 Kentucky Derby, the names of Union Rags, Bodemeister and Gemologist have been thrown around a lot as having the best chances of winning the historic horse race.
But even Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia says this is one of the most wide-open Kentucky derbies in years.
So who has a shot other than the Big Three?
Let us examine.
3. Take Charge Indy
Take Charge Indy has six career starts, winning twice and placing second twice. He just won the Florida Derby in late March, beating out Union Rags. He's off to a great start in 2012 and appears poised to be better than last year.
2. Dullahan
In eight career starts, Dullahan has never finished worse than fifth. He's also coming off a victory in the Blue Grass at Keeneland, in which he ran down Hansen to win by 1.5 lengths.
His experience running on multiple surfaces, coupled with his come-from-behind style, has earned him his fair share of support this year.
1. Creative Cause
In eight career starts, Creative Cause has never been out of the money. He owns four first-place finishes, including in the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita in March where he defeated Bodemeister. He was barely nosed by I'll Have Another in the Santa Anita Derby three weeks ago.
As one of the most consistent horses in the field, expect Creative Cause to make a run at it.
