Mayweather vs. Cotto: Keys to Floyd's Total Domination of Cotto
Floyd Mayweather versus Miguel "Junito" Cotto is shaping up to be a classic fight, but there's no question that Money has the tools to dominate. Obviously, anything can happen, but if everything is equal and both boxers fight to their fullest potential, Mayweather will come out on top.
Whether or not you like how he carries himself outside of the ring, there's no one who can beat Mayweather when he's on top of his game. His 42-0 record can attest to that. With that being said, this is far from a sure thing. There are still things Mayweather must do in order to secure a win over Cotto.
Here's a look at what he needs to accomplish on May 5.
Utilize His Speed
Mayweather is moving to the light middleweight class for the first time since he took down Oscar De La Hoya in 2007, exactly five years prior to his upcoming fight.
Despite having to put on the extra weight, Mayweather will remain faster and quicker than everyone in this class, especially Cotto.
Mayweather certainly won't be able to out-power Cotto, but his tactician skills and tremendous quickness are going to give Junito tons of problems.
As long as Money keeps moving and stays away from Cotto, Junito will never get comfortable. Mayweather will stroll to a victory.
Avoid the Big Punch
Mayweather will control this fight, but Cotto packs the type of punch that could end things in an instant. Nonetheless, it's hard to believe Junito will be able to reach Money to land the big one.
Junito has more power than De La Hoya, who gave Mayweather plenty of problems, but he doesn't have the reach or the jab like The Golden Boy had. If he wants to move in and land the big blow, Cotto is going to have to to land some solid punches from the outside first.
That isn't going to happen.
Mayweather is too good at defense and too fast to let himself be susceptible to something like that.
Stay Accurate
The first two keys are for the defensive side of the ring, but Mayweather will still have to land some punches for the win.
Fortunately for Money, if he completes the first two steps, he won't have to land a ton of punches on offense or go for the big blow. He just needs to do what has been so successful for him in the past. He needs to continue to establish himself as the most accurate puncher in history.
If this turns into a slow chess match, Mayweather will pick Cotto apart. If it quickens up, Mayweather will destroy him.
As long as Money doesn't overthink things, he'll head off to jail with a 43-0 record.
