MMA: Jon Jones' Elbows and the Most Dangerous Strikes in the UFC

Riley KontekJun 7, 2018

In the UFC, it only takes one strike to change a fight completely. It can come out of nowhere or it can be a signature strike that is inevitable. Either way, these strikes can be game-changers.

Here are the 10 most dangerous strikes in MMA today. They are devastating strikes that are among the most effective in the world.

Honorable Mentions

1 of 11

Russow Hammerfist from Hell: This hammerfist single-handedly won Russow the fight. Just kidding, but look at the picture to look at the ferocity of this strike.

GSP Jab: Georges St-Pierre has the most devastating jab in MMA today. For proof of this, look at his fight with Josh Koscheck. He peppered Koscheck with stiff jabs, turning his face into a bloody, swollen mess.

Dos Santos Uppercut: Junior dos Santos has a number of devastating strikes, but he may have one of the best uppercuts in MMA. In his UFC debut, he hit Fabricio Werdum with one of the most jaw-rattling uppercuts in UFC history.

Showtime Kick: The Showtime Kick could be in the top 10, but it did not knock out Ben Henderson. It was one of the most beautiful strikes in recent history and has not been duplicated since.

10. Bas Rutten Liver Strikes

2 of 11

Bas Rutten is renowned for his devastating striking ability, but he is best known for his devastating liver strikes. Whether they be liver punches, kicks or knees, Rutten has hurt many opponents while aiming for their exposed livers.

An example of how devastating Rutten's liver strikes are can be seen in one of his encounters with Jason DeLucia. Rutten threw a devastating kick at DeLucia's body, causing his liver to rupture and effectively ending the fight.

9. Anderson Silva Front Kick

3 of 11

Anderson Silva's front kick is one of the most dangerous strikes in MMA because it is almost impossible to spot. Silva gave credit to Steven Seagal showing him the kick, but I can honestly say that I doubt it.

Silva utilized this kick in his title fight against Vitor Belfort. It happened so fast that nobody knew what happened. Even more than that, Belfort didn't even know where he was after it happened.

8. Aldo Double Knee

4 of 11

Jose Aldo is the best striker in the lower weight divisions, and it was on full display in his fight against Cub Swanson. The fight didn't last long, and it ended with Swanson turtled up from the immense pain he was in.

Aldo took a quick step forward and unleashed one of the most brutal attacks ever. He threw a double flying knee, wowing the crowd and finishing the defenseless Swanson.

7. The Uberknee

5 of 11

The Uberknee has taken out many foes in Alistair Overeem's career, and for good reason. Overeem's knees are devastating in the clinch, taking his opponents completely out of the game.

His most recent knee onslaught came against UFC veteran Todd Duffee, when Overeem rendered Duffee unconscious with hellish knees. There aren't many people who throw more brutal knees than "The Demolition Man."

6. Bones Jones Elbows

6 of 11

Jon Jones throws elbows in many different ways and all are effective. Whether he's breaking Brandon Vera's face from guard with an elbow or rocking Stephan Bonnar with a spinning back elbow, any way Jones throws the elbow, it is dangerous.

Jones turned the tides of his fight with Lyoto Machida using elbow strikes on the ground. After he shook Machida with those elbows, it opened up the opportunity to finish Machida not much later.

5. Iceman Overhand

7 of 11

Few weapons in the early days of MMA were as feared as Chuck Liddell's overhand right. This punch was a game-changer that would either put opponents out cold or make them too afraid to even stand with him.

Liddell's combinations were nasty, but when he unleashed his overhand right, it usually spelled the end of the fight.

4. Barboza Wheel Kick

8 of 11

One of the most beautiful strikes that I have ever seen, Edson Barboza's wheel kick is a devastating maneuver. For proof, look what he did to Terry Etim.

When Barboza nailed Etim with his wheel kick, Etim was out before he even hit the floor. His body was stiff as a board and his toes were curled up like the Wicked Witch of the West.

He also used this kick on Anthony Njokuani, but couldn't finish him because the bell rang.

3. Machida Crane Kick

9 of 11

Similar to Anderson Silva's front kick, Lyoto Machida's crane kick came straight out of The Karate Kid. From out of nowhere, he unleashed this devastating kick on Randy Couture and ended the fight.

The kick is so hard to defend because it comes out of nowhere. It was so dangerous that Couture lost a couple of teeth, despite wearing a mouth guard.

2. Cro Cop Left High Kick

10 of 11

"Right leg, hospital, left leg, cemetery"—the famous quote of the legendary Mirko Cro Cop.

Mirko Cro Cop's left high kick has put away many opponents in his career, and for good reason. The Croatian kickboxer had many devastating strikes, but just one left high kick could end the fight on the spot.

It is astonishing that Cro Cop was even able to hit the high kick on 6'6" Aleksander Emelianenko, as Emelianenko was much taller than Cro Cop.

1. Hendo H-Bomb

11 of 11

The most dangerous strike in MMA has got to be the H-Bomb that Dan Henderson throws. From the looks of it, it's like getting hit in the face with a wrecking ball.

This is the most dangerous strike because Henderson has great timing and cocks his hand until he is ready to knock his opponent's head off. The H-Bomb has ended many a man's night.

The best example of this comes from his fight with Michael Bisping. Henderson came in with a brutal overhand right that knocked Bisping's lights out. For a second, I thought Bisping was dead.
