Kentucky Derby Post Positions 2012: Horses to Avoid If They Land on the Outside
The dreaded outside position in the Kentucky Derby can be bested by only legitimate talents.
If a long shot is given that No. 1 slot, there is bound to be trouble once the field hits the first turn.
Churchill Downs isn't impervious to a pace-setter earning a win, but a horse that gets trapped outside early is downright doomed.
Post position can be a huge help to horses, but it can also be a deal-breaker. Here's a look at horses you need to avoid if they are too far from the rail.
Done Talking
Currently listed at 50-1 according to Sportsbook.com, Done Talking obviously already has his work cut out for him at Churchill Downs this weekend.
If he's given an outside position, he's going to have some trouble in this field. He's no perfect horse and getting lost is a distinct possibility for him.
Rousing Sermon
A 40-1 shot as of now, the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained horse will have some trouble keeping pace if it runs for too long. His laid-back nature could cost him if he's left out.
Trinniberg
The 45-1 horse earned a spot in the big race with two Grade 3 wins. He's in the race, but that doesn't mean he's ready to run from the outside to the winner's circle.
Keep an eye on where he lands, but don't be surprised if his numbers drop.
