WWE: Brock Lesnar's Feud with Triple H Would Be Perfect Headliner for SummerSlam

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

After Brock Lesnar lost to John Cena at Extreme Rules, despite rendering him a bloody mess, there was some question as to where Lesnar would go from there. After Lesnar attacked Triple H on RAW and "broke" his arm with a Kimura lock, though, there is little doubt that a feud is brewing.

This angle will allow both Triple H and Lesnar to be out of action for several weeks, as Hunter's arm will have to heal and Lesnar will probably be fired or suspended in a storyline sense. That means that both men will be kept off television for a while before Lesnar makes a surprise return and is confronted by Triple H; or Triple H returns and WWE reinstates Lesnar so the two can have a match.

Either way, it seems as though SummerSlam is the target pay-per-view for Lesnar and Triple H to meet in the ring. Aside from WrestleMania and Royal Rumble, SummerSlam is the company's biggest event of the year, so there is no question that they're already preparing for it. It remains to be seen what will be done with John Cena and CM Punk between now and then, but Lesnar-vs.-Triple H would be a great headliner.

I'm not one of those people who buy into the notion that you have to be a muscle-bound freak to succeed in the business, but from a physique perspective Triple H is a good match for Lesnar. As much as I enjoy Punk, with the way the WWE is making Lesnar look like a ruthless monster, it probably wouldn't be realistic for a guy like Punk to beat him.

Triple H, on the other hand, has the size and the pedigree to be a believable foe. Triple H has vanquished pretty much everyone put in front of him over the course of his career, but Lesnar would present a totally different challenge. There is already a solid basis for a feud between them set up, so all that's left to do is for them to resume it a couple months down the line.

Say what you will about Triple H being old and Lesnar being an outsider, but there is no doubt that these guys can still go. Triple H just had one of the greatest matches of his career against The Undertaker at WrestleMania, while Lesnar was in an excellent one in his own right against Cena at Extreme Rules. Both men are more than capable of putting on a brutal and believable matchup at this stage in their respective careers.

On top of that, they still draw in fans as well. Triple H may not be at the same level as Cena and Punk like he once was, but since he is only an occasional wrestler there is some novelty to his appearances as fans want to see him. As for Lesnar, there is no question that his return kept things fresh after WrestleMania and it generated interest in Extreme Rules that normally isn't present.

With Triple H and Lesnar wrestling at SummerSlam, it would make not only for a solid main event, but a strong all-around card as well. Both Cena and Punk would have their own matches on the undercard, as well as other top guys like Randy Orton and Sheamus. Putting two non-regulars on the top of the card simply does wonders in terms of depth, just as The Rock did for WrestleMania.

Also, this particular match could easily be spiced up with stipulations such as Lesnar being reinstated if he wins or perhaps Triple H having to step down as CEO if he loses. There are plenty of possibilities that will make the build toward the match intriguing, and both men have exhibited brutal characteristics as wrestlers, so it should be a fantastic brawl.

Triple H-vs.-Lesnar isn't a match that I would want atop the card at WrestleMania, but it works well for SummerSlam. The goal is to generate as much buzz and get as many pay-per-view buys as possible, and anything that Lesnar is involved in seems likely to do both. Lesnar and Triple H seem like a perfect match and there is no question that they should be the ones to headline SummerSlam.
