WWE News: John Cena vs. John Laurinaitis Would Be a Complete Disaster

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

Everybody in the WWE Universe probably did a double take when John Laurinaitis announced he would face John Cena at Over the Limit. Having Cena go from a victory over Brock Lesnar to facing "Big Johnny" would be a catastrophe.

It's impossible to take what Laurinaitis says on the mic as truth because he makes so many mistakes, but WWE.com later confirmed it.

It still seems more like a storyline than an actual match that's going to happen, though.

Cena talked about "going home" after Extreme Rules, which made it sound like he was preparing to take a vacation rather than start another feud. A series of assaults from Laurinaitis and his enforcer Lord Tensai should help write him off television, if that's the case.

If the match were to go on as announced, it would be a no-win situation. The creative team can't have Cena lose to Laurinaitis after a tremendous battle against Lesnar. No matter how many gimmicks it adds, it just doesn't make any sense.

The flip side wouldn't work, either.

Giving Cena a victory in the match wouldn't do anything to help his character. If anything, it would just kill the momentum he gained on Sunday night when fans were actually cheering for him after the match.

It was surprising to see him defeat Lesnar after watching the former UFC champion get built into a dominant force since his return. Transitioning from that to a feud with one of the most boring personalities in the WWE would become a mess; there's no way around it.

Hopefully, the attack on Raw was just the start of giving Cena a break as opposed to anything else. Since he's basically a superhero at this point, it will take several beatdowns before they feel safe taking him off screen for a while.

The last thing anybody should want to see is Laurinaitis back in the ring.

He can't even remember a few simple lines when he's asked to give a promo, so it's hard to imagine him remembering all of the different spots necessary to compete in a real match.

After all, there's a reason Johnny Ace never ascended to anything more than being a tag team champion during his wrestling career. It's unclear what the plan is moving forward for him, but a match against Cena shouldn't be in the cards.

The WWE has succeeded with two straight pay-per-views. If Cena and Laurinaitis have a match at Over the Limit, that streak will end.
