NFL Draft 2012: Breaking Down the Impact of Fallen Draft Stars

Chris TrapassoMay 31, 2018

Just because a prospect falls into the seventh round or isn't drafted at all doesn't mean he can't make an impact on an NFL team.

These three big-name players saw their stocks plummet on draft weekend.

Let's analyze the type of impact they'll have on their respective teams.

Alfonzo Dennard, CB, New England Patriots

An altercation with a police officer during the pre-draft process was probably the biggest determining factor behind Dennard's plummet to the seventh round.

However, he landed in a great situation with the New England Patriots—a team with a great locker room. With Bill Belichick's no-nonsense demeanor, Dennard will be forced to mature and focus on his craft.

In a secondary that has a few sound players but needs depth and overall improvement, Dennard should compete for a job as a situational nickel or dime cornerback covering slot receivers.

He excels in man-to-man coverage but was slightly exposed this season by elite receivers on the outside.

His smaller frame and quick-twitch ability will give him a good chance to make an impact with the Patriots.

Vontaze Burfict, LB, Cincinnati Bengals

No one saw their stock fall as much as Vontaze Burfict. On- and off-field issues were abundant and his production decreased in 2011 after a promising 2010.

The Bengals have a history of taking risks on players with off-field problems and have done a relatively good job keeping those players out of trouble in Cincinnati.

With the fiery Mike Zimmer as his defensive coordinator, Burfict won't be able to slack off whatsoever and will work behind a solid defensive line that was one of the best in the AFC last season.

Due to his poor work ethic, I see it as an extreme long shot that he makes an impact with the Bengals, or even makes the roster.

Chris Polk, RB, Philadelphia Eagles

Polk's a fine runner who was wildly productive in college (over 1,400 rushing yards in 2010 and 2011) who's one one of the best receiving backs in the country.

He dealt with nagging hip and shoulder injuries during college, but neither of them really slowed him down at Washington.

If he can stay healthy, I truly believe he will beat out Bryce Brown for the No. 3 running back spot and could become the ideal complementary back to LeSean McCoy when Ronnie Brown begins to slow down.
