Washington Redskins 2012 Draft: What Will Adam Gettis Mean for the O-Line?
After a double haul in the fourth round, the Washington Redskins used their fifth-round pick to select guard Adam Gettis. The Iowa guard becomes the second interior lineman picked up by the Redskins in this year's draft.
Drafting Gettis, along with the third-round pick of SMU guard Josh LeRibeus, could indicate a position switch from left guard for Kory Lichtensteiger. The former Denver Bronco has struggled with injuries and could slide over to center, or he could be used as a backup all across the interior.
If so, the Redskins will be hoping either LeRibeus or Gettis can slot into a starting guard spot on the left side. Taking two guards also puts pressure on right guard Chris Chester, who had an indifferent first season in D.C. after arriving as a free agent from the Baltimore Ravens.
Gettis has the quickness and mobility skills to push for playing time. Although his frame is slight, the 6'2", 293-pounder plays with exceptional leverage and is athletic enough to fit as a zone-blocker.
Like LeRibeus, Gettis is not a lineman who was commonly linked with the team prior to the draft. However, his selection is another indication that, despite standing pat in free agency, the Redskins have not yet settled on the makeup of their offensive line for the 2012 season.
