Russell Wilson: Seahawks QB Looks Destined to Be Next Seneca Wallace
Russell Wilson is a good athlete. As long as no one aspires for him to be more than a career back up, no one will be disappointed.
He had a solid collegiate career (3175 passing yards, 33 TD and only four INT in 2011).
Wilson has dome dynamic playmaking skills, but his height, athleticism, team and situation scream Seneca Wallace 2.0.
Both players have insisted they are QBs. Their athleticism could be changed to a slash-style player. To their credit, they are committed to staying under center.
Their 5'11", 200 pound stature makes that a bit of an issue.
Though Wilson has a slightly stronger arm than Wallace, neither has a cannon. It makes them both game managers that must use their legs to maximize effectiveness.
Another similarity you can't ignore is the team that drafted both players.
Both players were drafted by the Seattle Seahawks—Wilson in the third round, Wallace in the fourth round.
Wallace came out of Iowa State in 2003, so the regime isn't the same, but the situation is similar.
The Seahawks had Matt Hasselbeck as the starter in 2003. Because of this, and Wallace's need to improve as an NFL QB, he didn't see regular season action until 2005—that was as a WR.
Wilson could be looking at the same situation.
The Seahawks just signed free agent Matt Flynn to be their starting QB. Barring injury, Wilson won't see any action under center for a while.
Ultimately, Wallace was used as a receiver and a gadget player in Seattle. To get on the field, Wilson may have to do the same thing.
Wilson had some great moments as a QB while at Wisconsin, but his physical limitations may never allow him to have those moments in the NFL; at least not as a QB.
