NFL Draft Rumors: Latest Buzz Before Second and Third Rounds

Zach KruseApr 27, 2012

With the second and third rounds of the 2012 NFL draft less than an hour away, we run down a few of the latest buzz and rumors items from around the league, including the Denver Broncos' interest in quarterback Brock Osweiler, a cornerback and receiver the St. Louis Rams may take in the second round and the Cleveland Browns' potential draft-day trade of quarterback Colt McCoy.

Broncos Like Osweiler on Day 2?

The Denver Broncos have been wheeling-and-dealing at the quarterback position this offseason, and we shouldn't expect that to change in the draft.

The Broncos are expected to be one team interested in Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweilier during the second or third round, according to Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post

"

"The Broncos figure to take a hard look at ASU quarterback Brock Osweiler today too and will come out of this draft with a developmental passer," Legwold wrote Friday.

"

Denver needs a young player to mold at the position after signing the biggest free agent in NFL history in Peyton Manning and trading the most important backup quarterback in NFL history in Tim Tebow this offseason.

While taller than 99 percent of NFL quarterbacks, the 6-foot-7 Osweiler represents a solid option to work behind Manning if taken by Denver in the third round.

Jenkins to St. Louis Rams in Second?

A top-10 talent on the field, North Alabama cornerback Janoris Jenkins fell completely out of the first round Thursday because of several off-the-field concerns. He may not last long on day two, however.

According to Sports Illustrated's Peter King, the St. Louis Rams could be interested in taking the maligned cornerback with one of their three second rounders.

"I think the Rams, with three of the first 13 picks in round two, will look hard at troubled cornerback Janoris Jenkins with one of them," King wrote.

The Rams kick off the second round at No. 33 overall, then have two other picks within the next 12 selections. While a risk off-the-field, Jenkins is certainly worth a high second-round selection from a value standpoint. If you go back and watch his tape from 2010 with Florida, you see a cornerback that shut down SEC receivers A.J. Green and Julio Jones.

St. Louis should pull the trigger.

Rams head coach Jeff Fisher could handle a personality like Jenkins in his locker room and he needs a shutdown cornerback.

Receiver to Kick Off Second Round?

Several media outlets, including the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Sports Illustrated have predicted that the Rams will use the No. 33 overall pick (and first of the second round) on a wide receiver. Which one is anyone's guess.

Jim Thomas of the Post-Dispatch opined Friday that Brian Quick (Appalachian State), Rueben Randle (LSU) and Chris Givens (Wake Forest) are the most likely candidates to kick off the second round, while King gave St. Louis Randle at No. 33 overall.

Regardless of who you trust, it appears most likely that St. Louis will use their first second-rounder on getting quarterback Sam Bradford the playmaker outside that he desperately needs.

And even if the Rams pass on a receiver at No. 33, the team has two other second-round picks to get their man. It's a near certainty that one of the picks will be a pass-catcher.

McCoy on His Way Out of Cleveland?

The Cleveland Browns didn't hesitate in taking quarterback Brandon Weeden at No. 22 overall Thursday night, and there appears to be little chance the Browns took Weeden without the thinking that he'd be the team's starter next season.

This tidal wave of change has made Colt McCoy expendable, and it appears as if Cleveland could deal the highly-criticized quarterback before the draft is complete. GM Tom Heckert said Thursday night that dealing McCoy would be something the team discusses moving forward.

The Green Bay Packers may be one team that attempts a deal for McCoy, and Phil Huber of Packer Report reported the team was considering a move to bring in McCoy as Aaron Rodgers' new backup Friday morning.

Expect McCoy to either be straddled to the bench next season or playing in a different NFL city.
