2012 NFL Draft: Tracking the Biggest Free Fallers on Day 2

Matt MillerJun 7, 2018

After 32 picks in the 2012 NFL draft, which players are still out there who can make a major impact in 2012?

Andy Dalton was a second-round pick who went on to start all 16 games and lead the Cincinnati Bengals to the playoffs. Rob Gronkowski was a second-rounder in 2010, and he is now one of the best tight ends in the NFL.

Rounds 2 and 3 are incredibly valuable, and here are the guys we like best.

Lamar Miller, Running Back, Miami (FL)

1 of 10

The Miami running back is a player we've liked for quite some time. Lamar Miller has a great blend of outside speed to break away from a defense combined with the agility to make defenders miss in space. Miller isn't much of a blocker, but he brings value as an outside runner, receiver and even a return man.

A redshirt sophomore when he left Miami, Miller has very little wear and tear on his body and will have a very good NFL career.

Orson Charles, Tight End, Georgia

2 of 10

The most athletic of the 2012 tight end class, Orson Charles' stock took a huge hit when he ran poorly at the scouting combine. He took an even bigger fall down the board when he was arrested for a DUI shortly after, as reported by the University of Georgia student newspaper

Charles' stock hasn't rebounded since, and he's regarded now as a potential third- or fourth-rounder who has amazing upside if he's able to get his head on straight.

Vontaze Burfict, Inside Linebacker, Arizona State

3 of 10

One of the more promising players in college football before the 2011 season began, Vontaze Burfict took a nosedive of historic proportions this year.

On- and off-field concerns have pushed Burfict way down from his initial ranking as the No. 2 overall player in this year's class before the season began. FOX Sports reported that he failed a drug test at the combine. He also performed poorly in interviews and is regarded as an untouchable by more than a few teams.

All that aside, Burfict has incredible athletic potential.

UPDATED: Colts Round 2 (34): Coby Fleener, Tight End, Stanford

4 of 10

Colts Round 2 (34)

Coby Fleener was Andrew Luck's go-to wguy at Stanford, making big catches over the middle with his massive frame and exceptional wingspan to extend and make catches away from his body.

The knock on Fleener is that his quickness and film speed didn't match up with his 4.48 speed at the Stanford pro day. Fleener is straight-line fast, but lacks quickness in short areas to change direction both in routes and when evading tacklers.

UPDATED: Ravens Round 2 (35): Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama

5 of 10

Ravens Round 2 (35)

One of the bigger surprises from the first round was that a pass-rusher like Courtney Upshaw is still on the board.

There are concerns about his lack of burst off the edge, but anyone who watched Alabama play can tell you that Upshaw plays faster and more explosive than he times. Few players in this draft are as safe at linebacker as Upshaw is.

He may never lead the league in sacks, but Upshaw has high potential at both defensive end and outside linebacker.

UPDATED: Jaguars Round 2 (38): Andre Branch, Defensive End, Clemson

6 of 10

Jaguars Round 2 (38)

Andre Branch is one of the best pass-rushers in the 2012 draft class in terms of raw ability, but his production didn't always match up to that.

Branch has the athleticism to play both defensive end and outside linebacker, depending on the scheme he's drafted into. Graded as a late first-rounder before the draft, Branch could go off the board early in the second round.

UPDATED: Rams Round 2 (39): Janoris Jenkins, Cornerback, North Alabama

7 of 10

Janoris Jenkins' troubles off the field are well documented by us and many others.

To recap: He's been arrested three times—twice for drug possession—has four children with three women, was kicked out of the University of Florida, was suspended at North Alabama for one game for hitting a teammate and he was even tazed in a bar fight.

That should be enough for you to see why a top-15 talent is still on the board. Jenkins has very good man-coverage skills, but his issues as a man are killing his stock.

UPDATED: Bills Round 2 (41): Cordy Glenn, Guard/Tackle, Georgia

8 of 10

Bills Round 2 (41)

The big man from Georgia was a surprise omission from the first round after many had talked up his game as a power guard or right tackle. Slotted by some as the No. 13 overall pick to Arizona, Glenn is still on the board.

Glenn is a very good run-blocker who projects best inside in the NFL, and he should hear his name called early in Round 2.

UPDATED: Falcons Round 2 (55): Peter Konz, Center, Wisconsin

9 of 10

Falcons Round 2 (55)

Peter Konz is the No. 1-ranked center in the 2012 NFL draft, but a concern about an ankle injury that sat him down for much of the 2011 college football season is reason enough for NFL teams to have passed on the stud center in the first round.

Konz, if healthy, will be great. He's a tough center who can control nose tackles at the point of attack. He's also a good combination blocker who can chip defensive tackles and get upfield to take on linebackers in the run game.

UPDATED: Steelers Round 2 (56): Mike Adams, Offensive Tackle, Ohio State

10 of 10

Steelers Round 2 (56)

A borderline first-round prospect at one point, Mike Adams' stock didn't get helped when he failed a drug test at the NFL Scouting Combine, according to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora. Now Adams is still sitting at home, waiting to be drafted.

One of my top-rated players still on the board, where Adams gets drafted will depend on how high teams value a player who will most likely be a right tackle in the NFL and one who struggles with leverage and apparently a drug issue.
