NFL Draft Order 2012: Franchises Best Served to Hoard Picks for Future

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

Unlike the self-destructive individuals you might find on Hoarders, hoarding draft picks in the NFL is often a wise strategy.

Perhaps your team has multiple holes to fill that can't be filled by one player early in the draft. Trade down, and make sure your many needs are addressed.

Or maybe you don't believe next year is the year anyway, and the rebuilding effort needs to be bolstered in the future. Trade down, and get some picks for next year.

Whatever the strategy, stockpiling picks is often an effective strategy, especially when later on that guy you really want is on the board but you may have to make some moves to trade up and land him.

Never fear, for your stable of later-round picks is here.

Let's take a look at some teams that have already started smartly hoarding for the future and those teams that would be wise to start doing so.

St. Louis Rams

The Rams already have three picks in the second round (33, 39, 45), a pick in the third round (65) and two first-round picks for 2013 and 2014.

I think it's safe to say the rebuilding effort is in full swing under Jeff Fisher.

But don't be surprised if this team starts stockpiling some picks for next year. Surplus means options, and if there is one thing this team needs in its efforts to replenish its roster, it is options.

This year will be a good start. In a deep draft this year, the Rams could come out the biggest winners with three early second-round picks.

In two separate moves that may have frustrated Broncos fans everywhere but bolstered the team's middle rounds, Denver turned its 25th-overall pick into two picks (36th in the second round, 101st in the fourth round).

The Broncos are now locked and loaded for the the next two days of the draft, with picks coming at 36, 57, 87, 101, 108, 120, 137 and 188.

Not a bad haul. And for a team looking to solidify itself behind Peyton Manning, don't expect the wheeling and dealing or stockpiling of picks for next year to be over just yet.

The Vikings pulled off one of the truly great value deals in recent memory, landing picks 118, 139 and 211 for swapping their third overall pick with the fourth overall pick held by the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns wanted to ensure that another team didn't trade ahead of them to select Trent Richardson. And the Vikings, in essence, received three picks to give up one slot and still draft the player they wanted all along, Matt Kalil.

They then tapped into the surplus they had created, trading their 35th and 95th picks to the Baltimore Ravens to move back into the first round and select safety Harrison Smith with the 29th pick.

The Vikings still have a bevy of picks, with selections remaining at 66, 118, 128, 134, 138, 139, 175, 210, 211 and 223. Don't be surprised if some of this year's surplus is turned into some of next year's surplus—this team needs help in a lot of places.
