2012 NFL Draft Grades: Assessing Last 4 Picks of Day 1

Ryan RudnanskyJun 6, 2018

The 2012 NFL draft started off relatively predictably, but then everything exploded into chaos.

But sometimes "reaches" turn into solid picks, and the end of the first round was interesting, to say the least.

Here are my grades for the last four picks of the first round.

Minnesota Vikings, No. 29 (via BAL): Harrison Smith, S, Notre Dame

Grade: B

The Vikings gave up the 35th and 98th overall picks to draft Harrison Smith, and I like the move. The Vikings needed help in the secondary, and they landed the second-best safety in the 2012 draft class. Smith has great size and length, and he's a physical, strong player with solid range and instincts.

San Francisco 49ers, No. 30: A.J. Jenkins, WR, Illinois

Grade: B-

This was a very risky pick. A.J. Jenkins displayed bouts of immaturity and inconsistency at Illinois, and he needs to improve his route-running. On the other hand, he has good size, top speed, nice hands and impressive body control. With a solid coaching staff in place, I expect Jenkins to mature quickly and surprise in the NFL.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers, No. 31 (via NE through DEN): Doug Martin, RB, Boise State

Grade: B

The Buccaneers weren't able to land Trent Richardson, but they grabbed a top-three running back in Doug Martin, and bolstered their running game in the process. He's a strong, decisive running back with great vision, balance and instincts. He's had his fair share of injuries throughout the years, and doesn't have top agility, but he's still a solid prospect.

New York Giants, No. 32: David Wilson, RB, Virginia Tech

Grade: C+

It's not that David Wilson is a bad prospect. He actually could become a solid running back in the NFL, with good size, power, athleticism and explosiveness. But I don't think running back was the best position to address in the first round. I would have drafted Stanford tight end Coby Fleener, giving Eli Manning a weapon with Travis Beckum and Jake Ballard out for next season with torn ACLs.
