2012 NFL Draft: Best Day 2 Targets for the New York Giants

James DudkoJun 7, 2018

The New York Giants hold a couple of picks on Day 2 of the NFL draft and still have needs at offensive line and tight end, and have gaps along the defensive line to fill.

There are some intriguing options for Jerry Reese to consider with the 63rd and 94th overall selections. Here are the best three:

Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson

Dwayne Allen is a great value pick for the Giants at 63. His selection would immediately turn an area of weakness into a position of strength.

Allen is a more complete tight end than Stanford product Coby Fleener and fits the Giants' schemes well. Although the team added Martellus Bennett in free agency, he has been maddeningly inconsistent in his short career.

Allen is the kind of reliable receiving outlet and steady blocker who could quickly become a productive part of Big Blue's passing game. He is a great weapon on screen plays and can be the underneath target Eli Manning has missed since the departure of Steve Smith.

Zebrie Sanders, OT, Florida State

Zebrie Sanders is exactly the kind of big, physical and lengthy blocker the Giants need. He is versatile enough to play both tackle spots which should appeal to the Giants, given the issues they have on both sides of their front five.

Sanders' best attribute may be his quickness. He plays with rare foot speed for a lineman standing 6'5" and weighing 320 pounds.

Sanders possesses good mobility and lateral awareness. These are traits that would be useful in an NFC East loaded with edge-rushers like Trent Cole, Jason Babin, DeMarcus Ware and Brian Orakpo.

Tyrone Crawford, DE, Boise State

Tyrone Crawford is a productive defensive end with a knack for making plays in the backfield. He made 13.5 tackles for loss in 2011 and could become a key part of the Giants' defensive end rotation.

At 6'4" and 276 pounds, Crawford has prototype defensive end size and is a tough hustling and athletic pass-rusher. He plays with excellent leverage and a high level of tenacity.

Crawford is a slightly raw prospect, but has the kind of effort and penchant for getting into the backfield that the Giants will love. He could replace Dave Tollefson and encourage the team to perhaps finally grant Osi Umenyiora's wish for a trade.

Conclusion

Adding running back David Wilson in the first round immediately upgraded the team's biggest weakness. Finding a lineman to knock open the holes for him would be a wise move, as would adding an intermediate target for Manning.

Drafting another defensive end maintains the strength of that unit and would give the Giants options regarding Umenyiora.
