Tennessee Titans Draft: Why WR Kendall Wright Is a Great Fit
With the 20th overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft the Tennessee Titans selected wide receiver Kendall Wright from Baylor.
You can't say the Titans' front office hid their intentions to draft a wide receiver early in the 2012 NFL draft, they had four of the top receiving prospects in for visits during the weeks leading up to the draft.
The pick comes as somewhat of a shock to some as guard David DeCastro was still on the board along with defensive end Whitney Mercilus.
The Titans brass did express an interest in improving the interior of the teams offensive line this offseason, and after finishing 31st in sacks last season, defensive end is an obvious point of emphasis.
Ruston Webster said the Titans would have taken Wright even if Quinton Coples and Melvin Ingram would have been on the board, according to a tweet by Jim Wyatt.
However, Kendall Wright arguably offers more big-play ability than any other receiver in the draft.
He projects to immediately take over the team's slot receiver duties and, along with Kenny Britt, Nate Washington, Damian Williams and Lavelle Hawkins, gives the Titans their best receiving corps...maybe ever.
Some of Wrights biggest strengths are precise route-running and the ability to quickly come out of breaks. In 2011, the former Baylor WR finished with a single-season school record 1,772 all-purpose yards.
The Titans can now field an offense with three quality receivers, Jared Cook continues to improve at tight end and Chris Johnson is a dangerous option if the offensive line shows some improvement.
The Titans have officially shifted to an offensively oriented team. This pick marks the fourth time in the last five drafts that the team has drafted an offensive player in the first round.
Matt Hasselbeck and, when the reins are handed over, Jake Locker have all the tools they need for a powerhouse offense. Wright was the final piece as far as skill-position players go.
