2012 NFL Draft: 5 Players the New Orleans Saints Should Watch in Day 2

Jonathan PeraltaJun 1, 2018

It's finally here. Day 1 of the 2012 NFL draft. Unfortunately, the New Orleans Saints don't get a draft pick until the second day. Their first pick is the 26th pick of the third round. But wait! That doesn't mean that the second day of the NFL draft doesn't produce first-rate talent. Because we all know it does.

As I've mentioned in my previous article, the Saints need to focus on defense this draft.

Let's take a look at some players the team should look at and will hopefully still be around when the Saints are on the clock.

Josh Robinson, CB, Central Florida

The Saints need to address  their secondary. Although they did lock up Jabari Greer, they need depth.

Robinson is an athletic shutdown cornerback. He's great in off coverage and zone.

He ran a 4.31 40-yard dash, so if he loses a step or takes a bad angle, he has the speed to drive and close on the football, Robinson does a tremendous job of reading the QB's eyes and tracking the ball.

Ronnell Lewis, DE/OLB, Oklahoma

The Saints need to work on their pass rush. Steve Spagnuolo's defense requires pressure from the front four and less on complex blitz packages.

Lewis is a monster hitter, which is clear by the nickname his teammates in Oklahoma gave him, "The Hammer."

He has great frame for the linebacker position and is strong. He is explosive off the edge, and has a high motor to fly to the ball-carrier.

This guy plays with a lot of heart and intensity. He would be productive in rushing the passer and a good fit in Spagnuolo's defense.

DeQuan Menzie, FS/CB, Alabama

As mentioned above, the Saints need to work on their secondary, and adding an athletic player like Menzie would be a good move.

He kind of got lost in the shuffle at Alabama, but make no mistake, Menzie is an athletic, aggressive football player.

He has good footwork and decent recovery speed. He can play either cornerback or safety, and his hybrid style of play can be very valuable to a Saints team that needs depth and help in that area.

Alameda Ta'amu, DT, Washington

The Saints got Brodrick Bunkley. They just lost Shaun Rogers to the New York Giants. The Saints need to add someone in this position.

Ta'amu is a monster. He flashes a lot of athletic ability even with his massive size. He has great strength and can collapse the pocket. He has quick hands and is capable of getting to the backfield and generating some pressure.

His size and athleticism will no doubt command double-teams. Let's hope Ta'amu is a choice the Saints have once they're on the clock.

Cam Johnson, DE, Virginia

Again, as mentioned above, the Saints need pass-rushers.

Cam Johnson is a versatile football player with decent size. Has the ability to play either at the outside linebacker position or the defensive end position.

He's a quick and strong power player then can get around the edges or shoot the gaps. He plays with a lot of aggression and is more of a straight-line player, which can be worked on. He is raw, but has a lot of potential.

This NFL draft shall get very colorful, as always, and it should be interesting what unfolds the next few days. Enjoy the draft, everyone!
