Browns Trade Rumors: Cleveland Must Stay at No. 4 and Draft Trent Richardson

Timothy RappJun 6, 2018

I don't doubt that if the Cleveland Browns want to move out of the No. 4 pick, they'll be able to do so. With a lot of players available that a lot of teams covet, the Browns are sitting quite nicely with that pick.

But they should ignore the urge to do so. This team needs to find a face of the franchise, and that man is Trent Richardson.

Still, the deals appear to already be coming in. Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer passes along one such possibility involving the Buffalo Bills:

According to Charlie Casserly of the NFL Network, the Bills are interested in trading up to draft USC offensive tackle Matt Kalil. If the Bills knock on the Vikings' door at No. 3 and find that Minnesota has already struck a deal for a team wishing to draft Trent Richardson, they could reach out to the Browns at No. 4.

The Bills, according to Casserly, are willing to part with their second-round pick—No. 41 overall—to pull off the deal.

If Richardson is off the board—let's say the Bucs trade up to No. 3 to snag the stud running back—then I'd absolutely make that deal. The Browns have a lot of holes to fill, and having four picks in the top 41 selections would be the chance for this team to solidify its roster for the next 10 years.

But if Richardson is available at No. 4, that has to be the pick in my opinion.

The Browns lack offensive playmakers, they need a running back and they could really use a marketable player the fan base can get excited about.

Richardson fills all of those needs.

They could center their offensive attack around him, as he's the most compelling running back prospect since Adrian Peterson.

Plus, he's a safe pick. He doesn't fumble or have a history of injuries, his game lacks any true weaknesses and he doesn't come into the NFL with a ton of wear and tear since he was only Alabama's starter for one season.

Ultimately, the question is this: Would you rather have Richardson or the players you'll get with the 10th and 41st picks?

Personally, I'd rather have Richardson, but I can see both sides. Football is about difference-makers, and I'm not sure there will be a difference-maker like Richardson with either of those picks.

It's a good problem to have. This should be a very successful draft for the Cleveland Browns, one way or another.
