NFL Draft 2012 Live: Most Important Storylines to Watch for on Day 1
The NFL draft has its annual storylines, but the 2012 edition has some additional scenarios that carry legitimate intrigue that absolutely must be watched.
Below are the biggest, most interesting and truly captivating storylines you on Day 1 of the NFL's most compelling offseason event.
Will the Minnesota Vikings draft Morris Claiborne or Matt Kalil?
Just about everyone has had Matt Kalil penciled in to the Vikings at the No. 3 overall pick for a quite a while. He seems to fill a major need at left tackle and is the best blind side-protecting prospect in the class.
However, many respected draft analysts with respected sources like ESPN's Todd McShay are pegging LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne to Leslie Frazier's club.
This could have a major ripple effect on the rest of the top 10 and theoretically, the rest of the first round.
The first true mystery of Round 1.
Watching where Ryan Tannehill lands
You either love Ryan Tannehill, especially his promise, or you think he's got "bust" written all over him. Do the Cleveland Browns take a flier on this talented yet somewhat unpolished and inexperienced quarterback? Do they pass on him and draft Trent Richardson, undoubtedly the safer pick?
If so, the Miami Dolphins have to draft him, right?
Mike Sherman, Tannehill's collegiate coach, is Miami's offensive coordinator. Who better to groom the Texas A&M than him?
But there's always the chance the Dolphins want an instant impact guy. How fall would Tannehill fall in that case?
The "Mark Barron Watch"
All of a sudden, Mark Barron's draft stock is shooting through the roof. Reports surfaced on Tuesday night that the Buffalo Bills adore him, and ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted on Wednesday that he doesn't believe Barron will make it to the Dallas Cowboys at No. 14 overall.
Is this legitimate interest from the Bills, or are they setting up one giant smoke screen to get a team like the Philadelphia Eagles, San Diego Chargers or Cowboys to trade up?
We'll see.
Does Michael Floyd go before Justin Blackmon?
Who's the better overall receiver—Michael Floyd or Justin Blackmon? The Oklahoma State star was initially labeled as the best wideout in the 2012 class, but over the last few weeks, Floyd's certainly gained on him.
Do the St. Louis Rams grab Blackmon or Floyd. What about the Jacksonville Jaguars? Will one of these two fall to the Buffalo Bills at No. 10? Whom do they covet more. What about the Arizona Cardinals.
An abundance of possibilities for these two premier receivers.
The last-minute risers and fallers
A few guys typically make essentially last-minute rise up draft boards while others fall dramatically. South Carolina cornerback Stephon Gilmore could be one of the prospects picked much higher than everyone initially expected—maybe even in the top 10.
Where does Dontari Poe, the combine warrior, land?
Does Kendall Wright fall to the second round? What about Jonathan Martin? Both guys were sure-fire first-rounders a month ago.
The guy(s) surprisingly picked in the first round
Last year, it was Alabama offensive lineman James Carpenter and, to a certain extent, Christian Ponder. In 2010, it was Tim Tebow.
They were guys hardly anyone predicted to be drafted in the first round but ultimately selected within the first 32 selections.
Who's that guy this year?
Michigan State defensive tackle Jerel Worthy? Boise State running back Doug Martin?
