Justin Blackmon: Cleveland Browns Shouldn't Draft Star WR
There are rumblings that the Cleveland Browns may draft Justin Blackmon at No. 4 overall in the 2012 NFL draft.
But not only is Trent Richardson of Alabama a better player, Blackmon is not even a Top Five prospect. That's why the Browns shouldn't draft Blackmon.
Is Blackmon the best receiver in the draft? There's no doubt in my mind (although Michael Floyd appears to be gaining ground). He has good strength and leaping ability and he's electric after the catch.
However, there are enough questions surrounding Blackmon that should have the Browns backing up a bit. He's not very fast and, while strong, he didn't particularly light up the bench press at the combine, with just 14 reps. Also, at 6'1", 215 pounds, he doesn't have great size at the receiver position. He's a determined player, but how far will that get him if he doesn't impress physically against his NFL foes?
There have also been rumors that the Browns will trade back to No. 6 overall, giving the Rams the No. 4 pick. This would further demonstrate how much they like Blackmon because they would likely be able to get him at No. 6.
The Browns would be making a grave mistake if they defied the consensus pick in Richardson and selected Blackmon. Richardson has all the tools to be a superstar in the NFL, including power, speed, agility, burst, vision, patience and big-play ability.
While there are questions surrounding Blackmon, there are very few surrounding Richardson.
There's also the fact that there's more depth at the receiver position this year than at running back. At running back, there's Richardson, and then everyone else. At receiver, the Browns could still nab an electric playmaker in Baylor's Kendall Wright at No. 22 overall (via the Atlanta Falcons).
Richardson would help the Browns come back from the dead.
