Todd McShay 2012 NFL Mock Draft: Breaking Down McShay's Mistakes
Analyzing the NFL draft is a tough job. There are numerous things to take into account, whether it be a prospect's character concerns, his ability to run with the big boys in the pros or a team's needs.
Todd McShay of ESPN, when he's not arguing with Mel Kiper Jr., puts together NFL mock drafts. He has five of them so far. Like any draft expert, he will score his fair share of touchdowns, but he will also miss on a few prospects, fumbling the ball at the goal line and crying out in anguish.
Here's a look at his latest picks that I highly disagree with leading up to the 2012 NFL draft.
Dallas Cowboys, No. 14: Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis
Dontari Poe is a top prospect in this year's draft, but I doubt the Cowboys will pass up strong safety Mark Barron of Alabama here. The defensive line isn't a top need for the Cowboys, and they've been searching for a complete safety for years. Barron would be a great fit for a team that had its fair share of troubles last season defending the pass.
Philadelphia Eagles, No. 15: Mark Barron, SS, Alabama
McShay may have picked Poe here if he were "still available," but, nonetheless, I have to knock him for not giving the Eagles a run-stopper they so desperately need. It's not that Barron would be a bad pick for the Eagles; it's just that they need to add an impact player to the interior, and Poe or even LSU's Michael Brockers would be better picks.
New York Jets, No. 16: Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse
Chandler Jones may have risen up draft boards significantly, and I do agree he's a first-round draft pick, but No. 16 overall is a bit high for my liking. Plus, I would take pass-rushers like Alabama's Courtney Upshaw or Illinois' Whitney Mercilus before I took Jones.
San Francisco 49ers, No. 30: Kendall Reyes, DT, Connecticut
Kendall Reyes is a borderline first-round pick in my mind, so I don't have a big problem with him going No. 30 overall. But the 49ers aren't going to add a defensive tackle—they are going to add either another young receiver or a guard. I think they go with a guard like Midwestern State's Amini Silatolu, who should be available here.
New York Giants, No. 32: Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State
Mike Adams did not impress at the combine, to say the least. He performed poorly in drills and reportedly tested positive for marijuana, according to CBSSports.com. He has too many character concerns to be a first-round draft pick. I think the Giants go with Stanford tight end Coby Fleener, the unquestioned top tight end in the draft. With Travis Beckum and Jake Ballard possibly out for the season with torn ACLs, Eli Manning is going to want a threat at tight end, and Fleener has great size and speed.
