Larry Brown: Legendary Head Coach Reportedly Hasn't Been Offered Position at SMU

Jun 7, 2018

Update: Thursday, April 19th at 3:43 p.m. EST

The uncertainty surrounding the Larry Brown to SMU debacle is finally gone. According to Kate Hairopoulos of DallasNews.com, the legendary coach and the Mustangs have reached an agreement.

After yesterday's claims by Brown that he was not only not officially the head coach, but that he hadn't been offered the position at all, Mustangs fans had to be growing concerned. The official news means SMU's program is getting a legendary coach and one who is sure to take the Mustangs to new heights.

Update: Wednesday, April 18th at 4:22 p.m. EST

Initial reports that Larry Brown was returning to the sidelines and had already taken a position with SMU appear to be inaccurate.

According to Sports Illustrated, the legendary coach hasn't even been offered yet.

The prospect of Brown returning to the sidelines and manning the helm at SMU are still possible, if not likely. Mustangs fans shouldn't be discouraged, but it doesn't look like this is quite a done deal just yet.

Initial Update:

Hall of Fame basketball coach Larry Brown is going to return to the sidelines.

As first reported by ESPN via Twitter, Brown has agreed to become the next head basketball coach of the SMU Mustangs:

"

BREAKING: Hall of Famer Larry Brown, 71, agrees to become next #SMU men's basketball coach. Story to come: es.pn/eS1xuG #Mustangs

In a full report by ESPN's Jason King, he notes there's only one holdup at the moment, and it concerns Brown's assistants. Brown has offered Illinois State coach Tim Jankovich a "coach-in-waiting position," but Jankovich hasn't yet convinced himself to leave a Redbirds squad that is returning a lot of good players.

Nevertheless, King's sources claim Jankovich is leaning towards accepting Brown's offer.

Also expected to join Brown are Illinois assistant Jerrance Howard and former Kentucky assistant Rod Strickland, who spent the last two years working under John Calipari. Howard is one of the best recruiters in the country.

Brown last coached in 2010 with the Charlotte Bobcats, but he resigned in December after the Bobcats got off to a 9-19 start. He coached several other NBA teams during his career, winning Coach of the Year in 2001 with the Philadelphia 76ers. He won an NBA championship with the Detroit Pistons in 2004.

It's been a while since Brown coached in the college ranks. He was the head coach at Kansas from 1983 to 1988, but he left after leading the Jayhawks to an NCAA championship in '88. He also coached at UCLA in the late 1970s and early '80s.

Brown has a record of 177-61 at the college level, and a record of 1,098-904 in the NBA. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.
