WWE Extreme Rules 2012: Brock Lesnar and John Cena Put in No-Win Situation

Adam WellsApr 20, 2012

Brock Lesnar and John Cena might be the main event of Extreme Rules, but WWE has done both wrestlers a disservice in what would otherwise be a great battle between two of the biggest stars of the last 10 years.

WWE doesn't necessarily have to give the fans a clean winner. It is the first match in the feud, and it is a hardcore match, so there could be some kind of screwjob winner.

But then there would be a large contingent of fans who would feel cheated, because there is not a clear winner. Plus, who do you have interfere? Lord Tensai? Please. No one cares about him, so putting him in this match would be a waste of time.

So what happens if WWE allows either Lesnar or Cena to win clean?

You would think that, between the two, Lesnar has a greater chance to go over. He is wrestling his first match since 2004. He is the biggest draw on the show, so the fans are likely tuning in to see him win.

That would make sense, but in WWE, conventional wisdom gets thrown out the window. Especially where Cena is concerned.

Cena is coming off a loss at WrestleMania that left some fans perplexed. He is the top star in the company today, so perhaps he should have gone over The Rock, who is just a part-time performer at this stage of his career.

Having Cena lose two consecutive main-event matches to Rock and Lesnar does not make him look like a superstar. He will always get the big reaction, but the perception could be that he happens to be the guy now even though he can't hold a candle to other top stars from previous eras.

Even if that is the general consensus among fans right now, it should not be the mentality that WWE has.

Just thinking about what WWE is going to do in this match makes your head hurt. In some ways, that is good, because you want a little mystery in who is going to win.

But no matter what the outcome, there are big ramifications that can come from it. Either Lesnar looks like a dork after eight years away, or Cena goes two straight months without beating a big star.
