Looking at the Players the Cleveland Browns Lined Up for Pre-Draft Visits

Andrea HangstJun 6, 2018

The Cleveland Browns have used up nearly all of their 30 allowed pre-draft visits, with players having already met with the team or are scheduled to do so in the coming days. Let's see who they are looking at and which of these players might be realistic draft targets this year.

Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

Justin Blackmon is one of the players the Browns have been linked to in the first round, either at No. 4 or at No. 6 or No. 8 if they would trade down. He's considered the top-rated receiver in this year's draft, though that distinction has found some detractors lately. The Browns needed to visit with him, at least to do their due diligence.

Michael Brockers, DT, LSU

This may have been another due diligence visit, this time with the draft class' top defensive tackle prospect. It's doubtful the Browns go defense at all in the first round, but they need to cover all the basis in case of draft-day surprises.

Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

If the Browns do choose to pick a defender at No. 4, then it would likely be cornerback Morris Claiborne. He's clearly worth working out, and if worse comes to worse—well, there are certainly outcomes worse than the Browns landing Claiborne.

Kirk Cousins, QB, Michigan State

It's almost a foregone conclusion that the Browns will be drafting a quarterback this year, but the questions still remain of which one and in which round. Kirk Cousins would be a mid-round addition who would sit on the bench behind Colt McCoy for a season or two. Depending on which quarterback they choose is telling on the team's overall confidence in McCoy.

Lavonte David, LB, Nebraska

Lavonte David is a 4-3 specialist who could back up Scott Fujita in his rookie year (and perhaps take his spot if he is subject to Saints BountyGate punishments). He fits perfectly in the Browns system and has an outside chance of being their second-round target.

Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

The Browns need to add a receiver this year and will likely do so with one of their first three picks. Michael Floyd is the best-fitting top receiver for the Browns in this year's draft class, so of course, they brought him in for a meeting.

Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina

The Browns aren't likely in a situation to bring on South Carolina's Stephon Gilmore unless they want to use pick No. 22 on him. This meeting was about covering bases more than taking a close look at someone they plan on drafting.

Cordy Glenn, OG/OT, Georgia

Georgia's Cordy Glenn can play both guard or tackle, and the Browns are very much in the market for a right tackle. Glenn could be one of their first-round targets.

Ladarius Green, TE, Louisiana-Lafayette

The Browns have a number of tight ends currently on their roster, but none who can both block and catch passes with both ease and talent. Ladarius Green is an all-around skillful tight end with great pass-catching skills. He may just be a third or fourth-round target for Cleveland.

Jayron Hosley, CB, Virginia Tech

With 13 picks this year, the Browns have a lot of leeway when it comes to adding players. Virginia Tech's Jayron Hosley isn't a starter—he'll be a later-round pick—but while they try to develop him, he could contribute on special teams.

Bruce Irvin, LB, West Virginia

Bruce Irvin could be another target to back up Fujita if the Browns choose not to make a move for Lavonte David so early. He's projected to go in the middle rounds.

Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse

Though Chandler Jones had a knee injury in 2011, he's still projected to be a second-round pickup. The Browns may be interested, but there's only an outside chance they use pick 37 on him.

Matt Kalil, OT, USC

There's still more than an outside chance that because of draft-day trades, the Browns could wind up with Matt Kalil, the best offensive tackle in this year's draft, so obviously, they had to meet with him.

Doug Martin, RB, Boise State

Doug Martin's catching ability should help him out as part of a West Coast offense, but I don't see the Browns making a move for him unless they can't—or choose not to—draft Trent Richardson.

Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

Jonathan Martin could be a first-round or second-round draft target for the Browns, who desperately need a starting right tackle. The only place they'll find him is early on.

Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois

With all the defensive ends that the Browns are looking at, it seems that perhaps they aren't as thrilled with the prospect of Frostee Rucker starting for them this year. Again, it could also be subterfuge; all the defensive ends they're looking at are primarily first-rounders, and I don't see them going that direction early on.

Isaiah Pead, RB, Cincinnati

The Browns could ostensibly bring on two running backs in this draft considering they have the picks to do so. If they draft Richardson, it's still just Montario Hardesty and Chris Ogbonnaya backing him up. Might as well see if a third-rounder like Pead might be a good fit, too.

Nick Perry, DE, USC

If the Browns want Nick Perry, then he's a first-round, pick No. 22 kind of guy. With all these close looks at defensive ends, I wonder if they really are planning on taking one early on.

Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

The Browns are the leading candidate to land running back Trent Richardson fourth overall. As such, they are practically required to meet with him. He's most likely their top target.

Mitchell Schwartz, OT, California

If the Browns wait until later on to get their starting right tackle, they shouldn't hold off beyond the third round, where Mitchell Schwartz is projected to go. Otherwise, they won't get anyone worth starting this year and will instead have to hope for the best.

Amini Silatolu, OG, Midwestern State

Amini Silatolu played guard in college but projects to move to tackle in the NFL—left tackle specifically—but perhaps the Browns took a look at him just in case they could get him to go to right tackle and give up just a third or even fourth-round pick on him.

Brian Stahovich, P, San Diego State

Teams generally wouldn't meet with a punter prior to the draft, but the Browns have enough picks that they may use a seventh-rounder on Brian Stahovich. He could also be brought in as an undrafted free agent.

Donald Stephenson, OT, Oklahoma

Donald Stephenson started at left tackle in every game last season, but he may be able shift to the right, or at the very least serve as depth. He'd be a later-round pickup.

Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M

Will they or won't they? It's been the major question swirling around the Browns regarding quarterback Ryan Tannehill for weeks now. Though I think they won't, the Browns would be absurd to not meet with him, not only to confirm their disinterest but also to throw off teams interested in him.

Bobby Wagner, LB, Utah State

Bobby Wagner is tough and aggressive and missed the Scouting Combine, as he was battling pneumonia. This mid-round linebacker is worth taking a closer look at since teams didn't get a chance to in Indianapolis.

David Wilson, RB, Virginia Tech

David Wilson very nearly fits the profile of Trent Richardson in terms of his versatility, though he's not as good in any one area as Richardson is. They could go after Wilson at 22 or 37 should they miss out on Richardson.

Brandon Weeden, QB, Oklahoma State

If the Browns take a quarterback in their first three picks, it will most likely be Brandon Weeden at No. 37. Yes, he's 28 years old (29 in October), but he's talented enough that age shouldn't be much of a factor when it comes to his draft positioning.

Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

Kendall Wright would be a first or second-round draft target for the Browns if they choose to spend one of their first three picks on a receiver. Because of the way things are shaking out—many of the teams picking between 20 and 32 in the first round should go defense—Wright could easily slip to the second round, though he possesses first-round talent.
