Celtics vs. Heat: Rajon Rondo's Dominance Signals Deja Vu for Miami

Matt ShetlerJun 7, 2018

When the Miami Heat have struggled this season, their biggest glaring weakness defensively is exposed: The Heat simply can't stop opposing point guards from tearing them apart.

Last night, for the second time in 10 days, Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo had a field day against Miami, with 18 points and 15 assists. That effort follows Rondo's 16 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds against Miami on April 1.

Naturally Miami lost both games to a surging Boston team.

Rondo's efforts just added to what has been a season-long problem for Miami, as only three other teams in the NBA have allowed more points to opposing point guards than the Heat.

So far this season, opposing floor generals have averaged 21.1 PPG, while averaging 9.5 APG in the process. That goes to show that opposing point guards are having their way with the Miami defense. Rondo's recent exploits just go to show that this Heat team won't win a championship this season if the trend continues.

The NBA has become a point guard-driven league, and the good one's are hard to stop, but it's every point guard in the league that's had success against Miami more often than not this season. Rondo was just the latest, and he reminded us of a big chink in the Heat's armor.

Looking at potentially the top point guards that Miami could have to go through in the Eastern Conference, Chicago's derrick Rose already posted a 34-point, six-assist game against them. Rondo has averaged 18.7 points, 13.7 assists and 7.7 rebounds in three meetings. Out West, Russell Westbrook scored 28 points in each Thunder game against the Heat.

That's just highlighting some of the best point guards in the NBA, who have success against almost every team, but it shows that Miami has had their difficulties guarding the ball. Throughout the course of a seven-game series, this flaw could be exposed in a big way.

What Rondo's done as of late is remind the rest of the NBA that Miami is beatable at times. He also gave everyone the blueprint on how to do it.
