David Wright Injury: Updates on New York Mets David Wright Finger Injury

Josh MartinApr 10, 2012

The New York Mets may need a miracle to stay afloat in the early portion of the 2012 MLB season, so long as David Wright is out of the lineup.

According to Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post, Wright has a small fracture in his right pinkie finger, though he won't need surgery to repair the damage:

"

The Mets announce David Wright has a small fracture in his fifth finger (pinky?) and he'll be wearing a splint, but will not need surgery.

Wright suffered the setback in the third inning of Monday's 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals while sliding back into first base on an attempted pickoff play. The finger swelled up over night, forcing Wright out of the lineup and into the trainer's room during Tuesday's game, from which he emerged with the downed digit in a splint. Ronny Cedeno filled in at the hot corner in Wright's absence.

The All-Star third baseman had been on a tear prior to the injury, hitting a major-league-best .583 while boosting the Mets to a surprising 4-0 start. Wright's presence will be sorely missed on a team lacking punch in the batting order, especially after losing star shortstop Jose Reyes—last year's National League batting champion—to the Miami Marlins via free agency.

The setback is particularly disappointing for Wright, who'd been hoping for a healthy season after missing more than two months during the 2011 campaign with a stress fracture in his lower back.
