2012 NFL Draft 1st-Round Odds: Miami Dolphins

Sigmund BloomJun 7, 2018

The Miami Dolphins were in the market for Peyton Manning, and they got denied. They were in the market for Matt Flynn, and they got denied. They did sign David Garrard, but he is nothing but competition for Matt Moore to be the bridge to whomever they draft at QB this year.

The continuing need for a franchise QB hangs over the gauging of the Dolphins first-round pick odds.

75% - Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M - The Dolphins have painted themselves in a corner here, but it could be to their advantage if they don't get bluffed into trading up by a team choosing ahead of them. Tannehill has franchise QB potential, and Miami's offensive coordinator Mike Sherman was his coach at Texas A&M.

Sherman believed in Tannehill enough to plug him in for one-time Heisman candidate Jerrod Johnson, so there's little doubt that he'll go to bat for him. It's highly unlikely that one of the elite five players (I don't include Justin Blackmon) will fall to the Dolphins pick at number eight. The main obstacle would be GM Jeff Ireland having misgivings about Tannehill or the Dolphins falling in love with a QB available later like Arizona State's Brock Osweiler or Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden.

7.5% - Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State - Blackmon would fit right in the Brandon Marshall-sized hole in the pass offense. His game is very similar to Marshall's, predicated on his ability to win battles in tight coverages with his long frame, and then wreak havoc after the catch. I also believe there is a decent chance Blackmon will be there with the Dolphins pick, I just don't think they'll take him.

7.5% - Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina - With Cameron Wake looking like a potential holdout, the Dolphins have even more impetus to address their pass rush. Whether to give a newly-signed Wake a potent partner on the other side, or just to give the team leverage in negotiations with Wake, the urgency to reload at DE/OLB is getting stronger.

5% - Melvin Ingram, DE/OLB, South Carolina - Ingram might be a better fit in a hybrid defense than Coples, but he isn't as natural as a pass rusher as Coples. In general, Ingram isn't as flashy as Coples, although he is more of a defensive coordinator's toy with his versatility. Still, Coples is the DE prospect who fits the mold of a player that would cause a QB poor team to pass on Tannehill.

5% - Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame - Like the rest of the players on this list, Floyd is on the Dolphins visits list, and he is worthy of the No.8 pick. The question is whether the team would prefer his height and speed to Blackmon's more possession-based game.
