Christopher HallMay 31, 2018

We've all seen our grandparents try to work their voice-mail. My mother just figured out how to text message. Don't get me started on Skype and Facetime.

Now 71-year-old footballing legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento (aka Pelé) has joined Twitter.

The Brazilian's first tweet was a simple welcome to his fans and supporters:

"

Hello world, thank you for welcoming me to Twitter. I am very excited to share my life with you. Love, Pelé

"

Just nine hours after registering his account, Pelé already had more than 110,000 followers on the social networking site.

During his international career, Pelé won three World Cup titles with Brazil. He was named the tournament's "Best Young Player" in 1958 and received the Golden Ball in 1970.

At club level, Pelé made more than 600 appearances for Santos.

During his time there, the Brazilian club won 10 state championships. In both 1962 and 1963, Santos won the Copa Libertadores as well as the Intercontinental Cup.

He finished his career with two seasons playing for the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League.

In 1999, the International Olympic Committee named Pelé its "Athlete of the Century." The following year, Pelé and Diego Maradona shared the honor of being named FIFA's "Player of the Century."
