Todd McShay 2012 NFL Mock Draft: Top Prospects McShay Is Underrating
In late-March ESPN NFL draft expert Todd McShay revealed his fourth mock. As one might expect, it was a good mock for the most part and McShay also included the second-round.
That said, here's a look at the top prospects McShay underrated in his latest version.
Round 1, No. 17: David DeCastro, OG (Stanford)
At No. 17 David DeCastro is selected by the Bengals. It's certainly a good fit as the Bengals ranked No. 20 in rushing offense, but DeCastro can fill the interior offensive line need for team(s) ahead of Cincinnati such as Arizona.
The Arizona Cardinals are a fit for DeCastro, as they allowed 54 sacks in 2011 and had an inconsistent running game. DeCastro's ability to get to the second level and efficiency as a pass-blocker fits Arizona's need to improve offensively.
Not to mention, a complete guard like DeCastro will help win the battle in the trenches when the Cardinals have to face tough NFC West defenses like Seattle and San Francisco, .
Round 2, No. 33: Jerel Worthy, DT (Michigan State)
Jerel Worthy undoubtedly fits the Rams need to improve against the run, but unless St. Louis tries to use their other picks to sneak into the back end of Round 1, Worthy will be off the board.
With the NFL so heavily reliant on the passing game, defenses need the ability to apply constant pressure from all over. So expect Worthy to get picked up by the Broncos at No. 25.
Denver has a strong outside rush with Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil, but 21 of the team's 41 sacks last season came from those two players. Worthy is a constant menace in the backfield and will also improve the Broncos' 22nd ranked rush defense that allowed 126 an average of rush yards per game.
Round 2, No. 46: Devon Still, DT (Penn State)
We can definitely expect the Philadelphia Eagles to select a defensive tackle in Round 2, but Devon Still will be off the board before Round 1 concludes. Still fills the Bengals' need for a defensive tackle that can help stuff the run.
Against the better running teams (namely Houston) last season, that unit cost Cincinnati its season. And Still's ability to apply interior pressure and dominate one-on-one situations is well suited to the hard-nosed AFC North. The Bengals have a top-10 defense, but Still gives them top-five potential.
They'll need to retain a stout defensive front to give their secondary a better shot to lock down receivers. The Bengals are close to fielding a complete defense and will take the reigns from Pittsburgh and Baltimore with Still tracking down ball-carriers in the backfield.
Round 2, No. 56: Doug Martin: RB, Boise State
Easily the most complete back in the draft not named Trent Richardson, McShay has Doug Martin falling to Pittsburgh at the end of Round 2. Martin does fill the Steelers' need for an every down back and would take pressure off of Ben Roethlisberger, but he'll go as the closer to Round 1 instead.
At No. 32 anticipate the New York Giants taking Martin to preserve their two-back system philosophy. Under Tom Coughlin and with Eli Manning at the helm, the Giants have used two-back sets with great success.
They set up the passing game, provide extra pocket protection and open up the playbook to screens, draws, misdirection and mismatches against linebackers. Martin's services will be utilized against the best pass rushing division and change the pace from Ahmad Bradshaw.
