2012 NFL Mock Draft: Overvalued Players Struggling Teams Must Pass On
The worst thing a team a struggling team can do is take an overvalued player in the first round of the NFL Draft, and there are a few teams that run that risk in the 2012 NFL Draft.
It really comes down to the hype surrounding a player and whether or not they can actually live up to said hype.
There's also the factor of glaring team needs. For instance, the Miami Dolphins desperately need a star quarterback, but chances are no quarterback they take at No. 8 overall will be worth the value of said pick.
This could take a struggling team and make it much worse. You can't afford to botch a first round pick.
Here's my latest mock, with an emphases on overvalued players I would pass on, but that I still see being drafted:
1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
No April Fools' joke coming here.
2. Washington Redskins: Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor
One day we'll look back on this pick as the one that changed the course of the 'Skins franchise for the better.
3. Minnesota Vikings: Matt Kalil, OT, USC
Kalil is as solid as an overall prospect as you could find for a left tackle. He'll be great.
4. Cleveland Browns: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
Richardson comes with some risk, considering the short career-span of running backs, but he has a huge reward. He will be the focal point of the Browns offense.
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU
Claiborne is shut-down corner good, and he's a can't-miss pick.
6. St. Louis Rams: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
In reality he's a 10-15 talent, but the Rams have a huge need for wide receiver and they can't pass up on him here at No. 6 overall.
7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Nick Perry, DE, USC
Perry is athletic and quick off the edge. He's the No. 1 DE on my board.
8. Miami Dolphins: Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M
Tannehill is extremely overvalued as a quarterback. If I had it my way he wouldn't be drafted until the end of round two, but the Dolphins don't have the luxury of taking the chance that he'll be there.
He wasn't even en elite college quarterback, so I don't see how he's supposed to become the leader of an NFL franchise under center.
9. Carolina Panthers: Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis
Poe can get in the backfield and cause a mess.
10. Buffalo Bills: Riley Reiff, LT, Iowa
Reiff is a very athletic tackle that will be a staple on the Bills line for years.
11. Kansas City Chiefs: David DeCastro, OG, Stanford
Second best overall player in this draft, as far as pure football mechanics go.
12. Seattle Seahawks: Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina
Coples is extremely overvalued, and he's going here at No. 12 just because of his upside. At best, he can be a dominant edge rusher.
Worst case scenario is that the concerns about his worth ethic and motivation cause him to be a bust.
Either way, this combination shouldn't be picked at No. 12, but he's a big name.
13. Arizona Cardinals: Michael Floyd, WR, N otre Dame
Arizona needs a shot to the arm after losing out on the Peyton Manning sweepstakes. Floyd will be a top tier wideout across from Larry Fitzgerald.
14. Dallas Cowboys: Michael Brockers, DT, LSU
The Cowboys get a steal here. Brockers is top 10 talent that fell due to circumstance.
15. Philadelphia Eagles: Dont'a Hightower, ILB, Alabama
Hightower is a downhill player that is great at the line of scrimmage. He's needed on this defense.
16. New York Jets: Courtney Upshaw, LB/DE Alabama
Upshaw is a versatile defender that can play standing up or with his hand in the dirt. Rex Ryan will love having him as an option.
17. Cincinnati Bengals: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor
Wright is a steal at No. 17 overall considering how much more dangerous he makes the Bengals offense.
18. San Diego Chargers: Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina
The Chargers have many needs, but Ingram is easily the best player available. He's quick off the edge and very athletic.
19. Chicago Bears: Cordy Glenn, OT/G, Georgia
The Bears will use Glenn to shore up their offensive line. He can play either guard or tackle.
20. Tennessee Titans: Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin
This is the first time I've had the Titans drafting Konz and he's slightly overvalued here at No. 20 overall, but he does fit their biggest need.
Chances are the Titans wouldn't even get close to drafting him in Round Two, so they're going to have to stretch a bit.
21. Cincinnati Bengals: Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina
Gilmore is a highly underrated talent in this draft. Will be a huge player for the Bengals.
22. Cleveland Browns: Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina
Jeffery has the potential to be the best wideout taken in the first round. He's a deep threat and will really help out Colt McCoy.
23. Detroit Lions: Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama
The Lions like to go with the best player available and that's what they'll do there. Jenkins also happens to fit a huge need on their defense. He's a top 15 talent.
24. Pittsburgh Steelers: Mike Adams, LT, Ohio State
Adams is a great prospect. He's raw, but has all the intangibles to be great.
25. Denver Broncos: Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State
Underrated defensive tackle that will fit right along this defensive front.
26. Houston Texans: Luke Kuechly, ILB, Boston College
This is a steal here for the Texans. Best player available, fits a need on defense.
27. New England Patriots (via Saints): Whitney Mercilus, LB, Illinois
The Patriots need a better pass rush, and Mercilus is great in that department.
28. Green Bay Packers: Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
The Packers need to get some help in the defensive backfield, so I have them stretching a bit for Kirkpatrick here, who is overvalued at No. 28 overall.
There are some character concerns which has caused his draft stock to fall, but he's got shut-down talent. This veteran Packers team should be good for him. The Packers don't fit the struggling team mold, but their defense may.
29. Baltimore Ravens: Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers
Sanu can stretch the field and is good after the catch. Will help this offense.
30. San Francisco 49ers: Kelechi Osemele, G, Iowa State
Osemele is extremely overvalued, but the 49ers need help on the offensive line and the first round is their best shot at getting that.
Osemele is huge, but he plays too tall, has sloppy footwork and a slow first step. Jim Harbaugh's going to have to do some coaching with this guy.
31. New England Patriots: Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan State
Worthy is a good value here considering the Patriots stay. He brings more to their defensive front and pass rush.
32: New York Giants: Chris Polk, RB, Washington
Chris Polk will be the better and more talented version of Brandon Jacobs.
Picks I Would Pass On
Dolphins: Ryan Tannehill
Seahawks: Quinton Coples
Titans: Peter Konz
Packers: Dre Kirkpatric
49ers: Kelechi Osemele
