2012 NFL Free Agency: 9 Coaches with the Most to Lose After Free Agency

David LevinApr 2, 2012

Now that the free agency period is winding down and teams are in the home stretch toward the upcoming draft, coaches and team management are starting to look at what they gained and what they lost.

And with those two variables, there some NFL head coaches that may not feel all that safe with their team and the moves that were made. In fact, some coaches who were given a reprieve last season when they were not relieved of their duties are feeling more than the hot spring sun.

Seats are on fire even this early in NFL. And coaches must make what they have and don't have work for not only the team but to save their jobs come this season.

These coaches especially need to worry a bit now that the meat of the offseason is taking shape in the NFL.

Norv Turner, San Diego Chargers

1 of 9

Every year he is a scapegoat or seems that way. Every year he lands on his feet. How many lives does this guy have?

This year he loses Vincent Jackson and signs Robert Meachem. He loses Kris Dielman to retirement and Mike Tolbert in free agency.

Can he recover, make ther right moves in the draft and keep his job? This probably is his last chance and the last chance AJ Smith, the team's general manager, has to make it work as well.

Mike Shanahan, Washington Redskins

2 of 9

Daniel Snyder mortgaged the team to move up to get Robert Griffin III in the draft, then brought in more receivers to help the offense.

All Mike Shanahan has to do is make it all work.

If not, Shanahan could become the fall guy.

Leslie Frazier, Minnesota Vikings

3 of 9

Leslie Frazier has some good pieces in place and has the third pick in the draft.

Now he needs to make it all work.

If he gets Matt Kalil, the big tackle at the third selection, that solidifies the offensive line. Adrian Peterson needs to come back strong, and Percy Harvin and Christian Ponder need to continue to develop.

If not, down goes Frazier.

Pat Shurmur, Cleveland Browns

4 of 9

He was given another chance to improve the team by team president Mike Holmgren.

But no quarterback in free agency and no real additions on offense while losing Peyton Hillis has to hurt this team.

The defense is improved and looked good last season, but one more strike and Shurmur could be out. The team must swing for a running back, a receiver and a quarterback in this draft.

Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys

5 of 9

You know he will be one of the first ones to be called on as a "potential" firing in the NFL.

The Cowboys need not only to win, but to get to the playoffs and make a run at the Super Bowl.

With all the craziness last season under Garrett and the enigma of Tony Romo, this is a prime example of a hotbed of activity that could boil over.

Bill Belichick, New England Patriots

6 of 9

I know this comes out of left field, but the Patriots have not won a Super Bowl in some time and it seems the Giants have their number.

All the free agent and offseason moves and the "drafting" smart is going to at some point catch up with this team. And Bill Belichick calls all the shots.

If the Patriots cannot get over the hump and claim another Super Bowl title with better receivers this year and a better pass rush, then could there be whispers that there are better coaches than "Capt. Hoodie?"

Rex Ryan, New York Jets

7 of 9

Her has the most to gain and the most to lose.

And yes, it all lies on Tim Tebow.

The Jets were a little frazzled at the end of the season last year. The locker room, maybe a bit divided. And now, Tebow comes in and has the town talking and the media all over the team full of scrutiny.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

If Ryan does not win this season, and the fact the team went out and got Tebow, does his job become a variable and does Mike Tennenbaum go with him?

John Fox, Denver Broncos

8 of 9

The same thing holds true for Fox, mainly because John Elway gave him Peyton Manning.

If Elway was wrong and Manning does not deliver, then there will be more angry fans in Denver than there already are.

If there is a letdown and this team does not make the playoffs, someone must fall on the sword. And believe me, it will not be Elway.

Fox could be looking over his shoulder if his team does not make the playoffs.

Chan Gailey, Buffalo Bills

9 of 9

He had this team moving in the right direction last season, and the team then hit a roadblock after Week Eight in the NFL.

The team signs ira quarterback to a large, multi-year deal, and then he falters down the stretch.

This team put all its eggs in signing Mario Williams to help the defense, and now the big name must deliver.

If the defense improves and the offense does not take a step forward or fall back some, Gailey could feel the heat in frosty Buffalo.
