Todd McShay 2012 NFL Mock Draft: Prospects ESPN Analyst Has Going Too Soon

John RozumJun 7, 2018

Sitting roughly one month away from the 2012 NFL draft, ESPN's other NFL guru Todd McShay revealed his latest mock earlier in March.

A slightly different mock when compared to Kiper's but nonetheless a good one, McShay does have some prospects going in Round 1 who are better slated to go in Round 2.

Miami Dolphins: Ryan Tannehill, QB (Texas A&M)

Ryan Tannehill is a good fit for Miami, but he's too much of a risk at No. 8 overall. For starters, the Dolphins have other needs to fill with a Top 10 pick and Tannehill has durability concerns.

With Matt Moore and David Garrard, the Dolphins aren't in the best of quarterback positions, but it's not completely awful either. As for Tannehill, he does have great size and mobility, but is a steep drop-off from the potential of Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III.

If Miami does want to land Tannehill, they could wait until Round 2 or trade down in Round 1. Obviously, waiting until the second round is more of a risk, because trading down would at the very least ensure multiple draft picks to build from even if Tannehill isn't available.

Tannehill's versatility makes him an appealing prospect, as he first played receiver for current Miami offensive coordinator Mike Sherman in 2008 and 2009.

So, in addition to health concerns, Tannehill has limited experience at quarterback and, more specifically, under center. In short, he has a lot more developing to do than Moore.

Green Bay Packers: Andre Branch, DE (Clemson)

Clemson's Andre Branch has a great knack for finding the quarterback, but he's not the consistent all-around defender the Packers need.

As a pass-rusher, Branch is best fit for a 3-4 like Green Bay. However, only in that capacity. For his career, Branch recorded 17.5 sacks, but he lacks against the run and doesn't possess the versatile repertoire to beat the better offensive tackles and double-teams.

Last season, Green Bay allowed an average of almost five rush yards per carry and ranked dead last in total defense and against the pass. While at Clemson, Branch also didn't have to defend the run much as the Tigers allowed almost 30 points per game.

Therefore, he played in a lot of shootouts and mostly was used as a pass-rusher, nothing more. The Packers need a guy who's stronger at setting the edge, can recognize plays develop quicker and changes directions with more control.

Branch has excellent acceleration; however, he still needs to improve on making moves, taking proper angles when the play goes backside and giving more effort overall.

New York Giants: Coby Fleener, TE (Stanford)

Coby Fleener is arguably the best tight end prospect in the draft, and the New York Giants are in need of depth at that position. But running back Brandon Jacobs was released in early March, so retaining that two-back system is crucial.

Fleener would fit the Giants' system, though, because he's a solid blocking tight end and has reliability in the passing game. With 62 receptions for over 1,100 yards and 17 touchdowns the past two seasons, Fleener was one of Andrew Luck's favorite targets.

New York, however, still has Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz and Domenik Hixon, as well as running back Ahmad Bradshaw. And, replacing Jacobs with another Brahma Bull needs to happen for setting up the play-action pass and winning the short-yardage situations.

Fleener's addition would also cause personnel issues once Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum get healthy.

Worst-case scenario for the Giants rests in taking a running back to complement Bradshaw, then getting a mid-round tight end like Georgia's Orson Charles or Ladarius Green from Louisiana-Lafayette. Eli Manning will be fine in the passing game, so keeping the ground game a threat in Big Blue's two-back system is key.
