NCAA Tournament 2012: Ranking Top 20 Dunks from This Year
As the 2011-2012 college basketball season nears its end, it's time to take a look back at the most spectacular dunks of the year.
From the tip-off tournaments to conference play and into March Madness, ballers from coast to coast have delighted us with their acrobatic endeavors.
Who threw down the absolute best slams in the country? Check out these rankings of the top 20 dunks from this season.
20. Michael Carter-Williams Posterizes God'sgift Achiuwa
1 of 20In his best game of the season, Syracuse freshman Michael Carter-Williams turned heads in Madison Square Garden with this emphatic slam.
He picked up a head of steam, cocked the ball back and humiliated God'sgift Achiuwa. St. John's was technically the home team, but Carter-Williams and the Orange made themselves quite comfortable in Manhattan.
19. Thunder in Puerto Rico
2 of 20How do you say "rim-rocker" in Spanish?
Alabama's Tony Mitchell startled the crowd at the Puerto Rico Tip-off as he shook the hoop with his put-back jam.
He's one of the most athletic and powerful dunkers in the country, and he continually terrorized defenses in the SEC throughout his career.
18. Rodney Williams' One-Handed Wonder
3 of 20With apologies to Victor Oladipo and Sam Thompson, Minnesota's Rodney Williams is the best dunker in the Big Ten.
No one in the midwest elevates and finishes like the 6'7" junior, and he makes this one-handed flush over Nebraska look easy.
17. Baseline Attack by Jeremy Lamb
4 of 20Connecticut's season didn't pan out the way Huskies fans had hoped, but it started out with an exclamation point courtesy of Jeremy Lamb.
The agile 6'5" sophomore put Colombia in its place with this jaw-dropping slam during UConn's season opener.
Unfortunately it was one of the lone highlights of the Huskies' 2011-2012 campaign.
16. Thomas Robinson Victimizes Baylor
5 of 20The Baylor Bears emerged as one of the top teams in the Big 12 this year, but it's plays like this that prove Kansas is the alpha male of the conference.
Thomas Robinson took a nice feed from Tyshawn Taylor and buried the ball with attitude.
He puts the "rock" in "Rock chalk Jayhawk."
15. Townsend Goes to Town on Grambling State
6 of 20After this dunk, Grambling State players probably had nightmares for weeks about white-sleeved left-handed basketball players.
Arkansas Pine-Bluff guard Savalace Townsend humiliated the Tigers on this play, but it was Grambling State who got a rare win that night.
Townsend stood out as one of the top performers in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, as he led the Golden Lions in points, assists and steals.
14. Anthony Davis Reels It in
7 of 20The Kentucky Wildcats present several matchup problems for opponents. First and foremost are the length and agility of Anthony Davis.
Against Georgia he swooped in to clean up Terrence Jones' miss, utilizing every inch of his 7'6" wingspan to corral the ball and slam it. NBA forwards are already losing sleep in fear of him.
13. And-1 Acrobatics by David Diakite
8 of 20The degree of difficulty on this throw-down is high because David Diakite got a forearm to the face in mid-air.
Rollins' high flyer absorbed the contact, kept his eyes on the rim and converted one of the best hoop-and-harm buckets of the year.
12. Sweet 16 Slam by Quincy Acy
9 of 20CBS Broadcaster Clark Kellogg said "that should almost be illegal" when Baylor forward Quincy Acy smashed this Sweet 16 slam through the hoop.
Xavier probably wishes it was illegal too.
Don't worry Xavier, you weren't the only victims of Acy's wrath.
11. A Flying Camel? Eric Griffin Soars.
10 of 20The Campbell Fighting Camels found themselves in the national spotlight after Eric Griffin took flight against N.C. A&T in November.
It takes guts to attempt a dunk from that distance in a game, and Griffin pulled it off with flair. His hangtime is astounding.
10. Buckeye Flies over Indiana
11 of 20Sam Thompson didn't get a ton of playing time for the Ohio State Buckeyes this season, but the 6'7" freshman got plenty of attention for his mind-boggling vertical skills.
His elevator goes all the way up on this inbound slam over Indiana.
9. Fast Break Delivery by Caldwell-Pope
12 of 20In a battle for Georgia bragging rights, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope went off to the races for the Bulldogs and jammed the ball home on the Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Tech's mental lapse turned into a steal and a poster in a hurry—four seconds, to be exact.
8. Duquesne Gets a Dose of Dezmine Wells
13 of 20This entry isn't one dunk, it's a series of six slams that Xavier freshman Dezmine Wells had against Duquesne on January 11th.
The first and last dunks of the video are my personal favorites. He makes every effort to rip the rim off the backboard.
7. Kentucky Killer: Victor Oladipo
14 of 20Indiana's thrilling upset over Kentucky was filled with memorable plays, but the jam of the night was Victor Oladipo's.
With the Hoosier crowd already in a frenzy, Oladipo's throw-down over Darius Miller put them over the edge.
6. Alexander the Great
15 of 20Cal State San Bernadino's Kwame Alexander reaped the benefits of trailing the fast break.
His hustle down the court was rewarded with a drop pass and the opportunity to take flight. Alexander's explosive leap rendered the defense helpless.
5. Acy Embarrasses Aztecs
16 of 20Quincy Acy is the only player to make this list twice, but he deserves it.
The Baylor bruiser put the San Diego State defense to shame with this pump fake and vicious baseline slam. It spurred the Bears to a decisive win over the Aztecs in November.
4. Darrion Pellum's Circus Slam
17 of 20Was that LeBron James? Blake Griffin? The Harlem Globetrotters?
Nope. It was Hampton Pirates guard Darrion Pellum.
The self-assisted alley-oop off glass is usually a moved reserved for all-star games and streetball, but he pulled it off in a game.
3. Jared Cunningham Can Bounce
18 of 20If you didn't just gasp or gawk while watching this dunk, there's something wrong with you.
Oregon State's Jared Cunningham nearly jumps out of the gym with this reverse flush.
The Beavers' dynamic guard is currently testing the NBA Draft waters, but he could opt to return to school before hiring an agent.
2. Terrence Ross Lights Up MSG
19 of 20In an exciting early-season tilt, the Washington Huskies clashed with the Marquette Golden Eagles in New York City for the Jimmy V Classic.
Stealing the show was Huskies sophomore Terrence Ross with a mid-air spin cycle to finish Tony Wroten's lob. Marquette won the game, but Ross won the style points.
1. OK State Erupts
20 of 20The elevation and ferocity in this alley-oop is jaw-dropping as Markel Brown buries Keiton Page's lob.
It was the signature play of Oklahoma State's stunning upset of the vaunted Missouri Tigers.
Brown's Cowboys didn't have much to celebrate this season, but this dunk and that game gave fans in Stillwater something to crow about.
