2012 NFL Mock Draft: Offensive Studs Sure to Be Top-10 Picks

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

The NFL keeps moving more toward high-powered offenses, making the cliché about defenses winning championships far less prominent than it was a handful of years ago. That's why teams should focus on offensive stars early in the 2012 draft.

Here's a complete mock draft of the first round, featuring one future Pro Bowler from each key position on offense who will highlight the first 10 picks of the draft.

1. Indianapolis Colts (2-14): Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

Peyton Manning is gone and many of his former teammates followed him out the door as Indianapolis begins to rebuild. Luck is one of the best quarterback prospects ever and should be the pick despite a strong pro day showing from Robert Griffin III.

Luck is capable of making every throw, including on the run, and has a good head on his shoulders. That's more important than most people acknowledge. Being asked to turn around a struggling franchise is a lot to ask a person just coming out of college.

Bringing back Reggie Wayne at least gives him a veteran wide receiver to work with in his first season. He's eventually going to be one of the league's premier quarterbacks, but it's important to remember even Manning struggled in his first year.

2. Washington Redskins (via STL 2-14): Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

Even though the Redskins took a chance by trading up to get this pick, Griffin has all the tools to turn their franchise around.

3. Minnesota Vikings (3-13): Matt Kalil, OT, USC

Taking an offensive tackle inside the top five won't be the most popular move among fans, but it's the right one for Minnesota.

4. Cleveland Browns (4-12): Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

Cleveland lacks offensive weapons, which is a major reason Colt McCoy hasn't lived up to expectations in his first couple seasons. Being a young quarterback in the NFL is hard enough, but without good receivers or a reliable running game, it's nearly impossible to succeed.

Richardson is far and away the best running back in the class, which makes him a better option than Justin Blackmon since there will be good wideouts available when the Browns pick again later in the round. Scarcity at a position is always something to consider.

Since the Browns ranked fifth in scoring defense last season, adding a couple stars on offense could lead to a major resurgence. A dynamic threat like Richardson doesn't come around often, so Cleveland should take him while it can.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-12): Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

Claiborne is the draft's top defensive player and will be a perfect fit for Tampa Bay.

6. St. Louis Rams (via WAS 5-11): Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

Blackmon falling to the Rams would be a perfect example of why their trade with Washington was good for both sides. The Redskins get the quarterback they so desperately need and the Rams stockpile draft picks while still filling a big hole.

The Oklahoma State product has the ability to have the same impact in his rookie season that A.J. Green had for the Cincinnati Bengals. Not to mention giving Sam Bradford a true top target would help his development in a major way, as well.

St. Louis isn't as far off as its two-win season would suggest. The Rams have plenty of talented young pieces, so it's just about filling in the holes over the next year or two and they'll be right back in the mix. Blackmon is a terrific start.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars (5-11): Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

The Jaguars would benefit from a reliable rusher like Coples attacking the quarterback.

8. Miami Dolphins (6-10): Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M

After missing out on Peyton Manning, the Dolphins will have to settle for Tannehill.

9. Carolina Panthers (6-10): Michael Brockers, DT, LSU

Brockers has a boatload of upside that the Panthers won't be able to pass up.

10. Buffalo Bills (6-10): Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa

Buffalo has significantly upgraded its pass rush, so now the Bills need to bulk up the offensive line.

11. Kansas City Chiefs (7-9): Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama

The Chiefs have several different holes to fill, making Upshaw a safe selection.

12. Seattle Seahawks (7-9): Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

Matt Flynn needs protection if he's going to succeed and Martin will provide it.

13. Arizona Cardinals (8-8): Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

Floyd has the best chance of any pick in the teens to move up significantly since so many teams need a wide receiver.

14. Dallas Cowboys (8-8): Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama

The Cowboys are in desperate need of a physical corner to fix their pass defense.

15. Philadelphia Eagles (8-8): Luke Kuechly, ILB, Boston College

Philadelphia's tackling was pathetic at times last season. Luckily, Kuechly is a tackling machine.

16. New York Jets (8-8): David DeCastro, OG, Stanford

Adding Tim Tebow means the Jets need to upgrade their offensive line to feel confident with him under center.

17. Cincinnati Bengals (via OAK 8-8): Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama

Jenkins has the talent of a top-10 pick, but his off-field issues will cause him to slide.

18. San Diego Chargers (8-8): Melvin Ingram, OLB, South Carolina

The Chargers have been seeking an outside linebacker like Ingram for years.

19. Chicago Bears (8-8): Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

Konz still makes the most sense for Chicago even though his stock has started to fluctuate.

20. Tennessee Titans (9-7): Devon Still, DT, Penn State

Tennessee would be getting the steal of the draft if Still reaches his sky-high potential.

21. Cincinnati Bengals (9-7): Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State

Another defensive tackle, Cox is more prepared to play right away than Still but doesn't have the same upside.

22. Cleveland Browns (via ATL 10-6): Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

The Browns can't afford to go another season without upgrading their wide receivers.

23. Detroit Lions (10-6): Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State

Adams isn't on the same level of the offensive tackles taken earlier, but still deserves to be picked in Round 1.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4): Cordy Glenn, OG, Georgia

Pittsburgh's offensive live has been a problem for awhile. Glenn would fill a major hole in that respect.

25. Denver Broncos (8-8): Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan State

Adding Peyton Manning means Denver's offensive should be fine. Worthy will help an already improved defense.

26. Houston Texans (10-6): Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech

A combination of Hill's blistering speed and Andre Johnson's all-around dominance will make Matt Schaub a happy camper.

27. New England Patriots (via NO 13-3): Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska

The Patriots' only true need is in the defensive backfield, where Dennard can make an immediate impact.

28. Green Bay Packers (15-1): Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis

Green Bay could go any number of different ways here, but Poe represents the best value.

29. Baltimore Ravens (12-4): Dont'a Hightower, ILB, Alabama

Hightower stands to learn a lot from Ray Lewis, who rubs off on everybody on Baltimore's defense.

30. San Francisco 49ers (13-3): Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina

Having filled their need at wide receiver, the 49ers can focus on a cornerback in the opening round.

31. New England Patriots (13-3): Mark Barron, SS, Alabama

The Patriots would love to emerge from the first round with two defensive backs ready to play right away like Dennard and Barron.

32. New York Giants (9-7): Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford

Fleener continues to impress in workouts and will give Eli Manning another target heading into next season.
