Sweet 16 Schedule: Teams That Have No Shot of Upsetting Favorites

Ryan RudnanskyMar 21, 2012

The NCAA tournament has become synonymous with upsets throughout the years, a place where only a handful of favorites are legitimately safe from a Cinderella story.

That's why when I say three underdogs in the Sweet 16 this year have no shot at winning, I'm undoubtedly asking for trouble.

But there are three teams I can't see pulling off the upset in the Sweet 16.

North Carolina v Duke

Sorry to be a downer.

Xavier (No. 10 Seed, South Region ) vs. Baylor (No. 3 Seed)

Of all the teams that don't have a shot on this list, Xavier has the best shot (if that makes any sense). Baylor, despite all its athleticism, has been known to be inconsistent from time to time.

Xavier's two leading scorers, Tu Holloway and Mark Lyons, shoot an unspectacular 42 percent from the floor. They also combine for 5.2 turnovers per game. The Musketeers' X-factor, Kenny Frease, isn't going to be able to do much against Baylor's frightening frontcourt.

Plus, Pierre Jackson and Brady Heslip aren't bad themselves, with the ability to close Xavier's advantage in the backcourt. Add in the fact that Baylor has a significant rebounding advantage, and I don't see this working out well for the Musketeers.

N.C. State (No. 11 Seed, Midwest Region) vs. Kansas (No. 2 Seed)

I will say this: Kansas wasn't particularly dominant against Purdue. In fact, the Jayhawks won by just three points, getting disappointing performances from both Tyshawn Taylor and Thomas Robinson.

I also like N.C. State's size and athleticism, which will help against Robinson.

But N.C. State only has one true perimeter shooter in Scott Wood and I see the Wolfpack getting into foul trouble against Robinson. Plus, Kansas defense allowed opponents to shoot just 34 percent this season.

Ohio (No. 13 Seed, Midwest Region) vs. North Carolina (No. 1 Seed)

Kendall Marshall or not, North Carolina will defeat Ohio.

North Carolina won't have the depth it did before with Marshall out, but the Tar Heels are so talented across the board that it won't matter.

John Henson is back, Harrison Barnes is still scoring points in bunches and Tyler Zeller remains a top player for UNC. Plus, Ohio doesn't have the scoring to keep up with the Tar Heels. Most of the Bobcats' damage comes on the offensive glass, but UNC has the rebounding to squash that.
