NCAA Women's Basketball Bracket 2012: Teams with Best Chance to Beat Baylor

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

With the Sweet 16 set, the undefeated Baylor Bears, led by center Brittney Griner, are looking increasingly difficult to beat. It may seem like an impossible task at this point, but all it takes is one off-game for Baylor to be knocked out of the NCAA women's tournament.

Baylor beat almost every top team in the nation during the regular season, and few even came close. It is going to take a special effort as well as an incredible scheme to hold Griner in check, but there are a few teams that have the coaching and the players to do it.

Here are three remaining teams with the best chance of knocking out Baylor.

Connecticut

Baylor won almost every one of its games this season by double digits, but the one team that was able to keep it closest was the Connecticut Huskies, as they lost just 66-61 fairly early in the season. The Huskies have a good outside presence with guard Tiffany Hayes, and if they are on the mark should they meet Baylor in the finals, they can put up some points.

On top of that, center Stefanie Dolson has had a solid season and can at least offer a bit of resistance against Griner. Most importantly, though, head coach Geno Auriemma is perhaps the best mind in the women's game today. If Auriemma can come up with a defensive scheme that forces Baylor to put the ball in the hands of its other players, then UConn has a chance.

Stanford

In what is likely to be a Final Four matchup, the Stanford Cardinal pose a stiff threat to the Bears. Baylor and Stanford didn't play each other during the regular season, so the Bears would have to deal with an unknown against the Cardinal. While no one player can match the ability of Griner, Stanford may have the player who comes closest.

Forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike has put up fantastic averages of 22 points and 11 rebounds per game this season and is Stanford's unquestioned star. At 6'3", Ogwumike isn't as big or physical as Griner, but she has a nose for the rim and can score away from the basket as well. If Ogwumike were to have the game of her life, an upset wouldn't be out of the question.

Tennessee

The last remaining pitfall in Baylor's region is the No. 2-seeded Tennessee Lady Vols. Tennessee's success is well documented, and while it lost eight games this season, the Volunteers have plenty of tournament experience. Tennessee lost by 11 to Baylor early in the year, but Pat Summitt is the most prolific coach in women's basketball history and should have a trick up her sleeve.

Tennessee probably doesn't have the size to slow Griner down too much, but it does have plenty of scorers. For the Lady Vols to upend Baylor, they will have to be banging on all cylinders offensively, particularly from beyond the arc. Senior Shekinna Stricklen is the team's leading scorer, and she would have to step up in a big way.
