NBA Trade Deadline 2012: Winners and Losers in McGee-Nick Young-Nene Deal
The final deal of the 2012 NBA trade deadline was a major three-team deal that landed JaVale McGee in Denver, Nick Young in Los Angeles and Nene in Washington. While none of those names possess the star power we'd expected, it was a league-changing deal that could send one team to the NBA Finals.
To find out who won and who lost the three-team deal, examine the following slides for proper analysis.
Denver Nuggets (24-19)
1 of 8The Denver Nuggets gave up Nene, and in return, acquired young JaVale McGee and veteran Ronny Turiaf.
While neither compare to Nene's offensive ability, McGee is a young, less-expensive player with an expiring contract. Should the Nuggets make a playoff run, his presence on the defensive end will certainly be valued.
Result of the Trade: Winner
JaVale McGee, Center
2 of 8JaVale McGee went from a centerpiece on the Wizards' hopeless team to a role player on a playoff team. As long as he's fine being a part of system, not an offensive free-for-all, he should thrive.
McGee's season averages of 11.9 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks make him one of the better statistical centers in the NBA. His athletic ability makes him a quality fit for the often fast-paced Nuggets offense.
Result of the Trade: Winner
Ronny Turiaf, Forward/Center
3 of 8Ronny Turiaf is going from a player averaging 14.5 minutes in just four games to a potential quality role player for the rest of the season. He's also leaving the Washington Wizards.
Why wouldn't this be a win?
Result of the Trade: Winner
Los Angeles Clippers (24-17)
4 of 8Since Chauncey Billups went down with a season-ending Achilles injury, the Clippers are just 9-10. With a dire need to improve at the two, the Clippers brought in one of the best possible options: Washington's Nick Young.
Young is a streaky scorer, but when he's on, he can put up 25-30 points. As long as the Clippers get the most out of him on a nightly basis, this could be one of the best pickups of the trade deadline's crazy day.
Result of the Trade: Winner
Nick Young
5 of 8Nick Young might be the biggest winner of any name or team on this list.
The Los Angeles Clippers are a team that was a quality shooting guard away from competing for an NBA Championship. With Nick Young on board, they're about to be competing for just that: an NBA Championship.
Quite the upgrade from being a Washington Wizard.
Result of the Trade: Winner
Washington Wizards (9-32)
6 of 8The Washington Wizards let go of two of their best young players, thus bringing in an overpaid and injury-prone Nene, as well as the nearly irrelevant Brian Cook. You tell me, did the Wizards do anything right?
Don't get me wrong, Nene has the talent to be a franchise player. Considering he can't stay healthy, only wants to win and has never played on an Eastern Conference team, there's a good chance this ends up being one of the worst trades all year.
Result of the Trade: Loser
Brian Cook, Forward
7 of 8If Brian Cook is going to get minimal playing time, he might as well do so with a contender.
The Clippers gave the Washington Wizards a player who is unlikely to average greater than 10 minutes a contest. Now, he has to do so with a team that is going nowhere.
Result of the Trade: Loser
Nene
8 of 8Nene will be making a whole lot of money to line up with John Wall and put up nothing more than a highlight play every night. The problem is, he'll be missing out on the playoffs for the first time since he was a rookie.
The upside for this move is that Nene can be a franchise player.
While Wall is clear to get the media attention at first, Nene has the potential to do for his career what Amare Stoudemire did in New York. Don't be surprised to see Nene as an All-Star center next year...
Result of the Trade: Winner
