The Portland Trail Blazers and 4 Teams Waving the White Flag in 2012

Bradlee RossMar 15, 2012

The Portland Trail Blazers have given up on their 2012 season after reportedly trading Gerald Wallace to the Nets for a couple players and a first-round pick. There are other teams following suit.

This is the point in the season where teams really decide if it is time to start the playoff push or the rebuilding process for next season. Many teams have already put up their white flags and surrendered.

Here's a list of some of those teams.

Portland Trail Blazers

1 of 5

The Portland Trail Blazers are three-and-a-half games out of the playoffs in the Western Conference. Apparently, that's just too far for them to reach.

They've given up on the season by sending Gerald Wallace to the New Jersey Nets, especially since they got back guys like Mehmet Okur and Shawne Williams for him. This was all about rebuilding for next year with another first-round pick.

New Jersey Nets

2 of 5

Even though the New Jersey Nets made this trade for Gerald Wallace, it isn't about making the playoffs this season. It is about convincing Deron Williams that the team can bring in the talent necessary to win. They know it won't happen this season.

Just like Portland, the Nets are three-and-a-half games out and have flown the white flag. It's all for naught too, because Williams will be in Dallas by mid-July.

Toronto Raptors

3 of 5

The Toronto Raptors have traded talented combo guard Leandro Barbosa to the Indiana Pacers.

The Raptors have been rebuilding for nearly two years now, ever since Chris Bosh left. Now, it appears that next year will also be rebuilding time for the lone Canadian NBA franchise.

Cleveland Cavaliers

4 of 5

The Cleveland Cavaliers have traded Ramon Sessions to the Los Angeles Lakers for a 2012 first-round pick.

This is a rebuilding move for this franchise too, but it really isn't as bad as the others for a few reasons. The Cavs are in a long-term rebuilding process around youth like Kyrie Irving.

That movement has already been paying off, as the Cavs are only two games out of the playoffs. However, their management realized that building for future years is more important than contending now. Bravo.

Washington Wizards

5 of 5

It's tough to be involved in trade rumors when you really don't have much of anything that any other team could possibly want. The Washington Wizards are in that boat.

They are eight games out of the eighth seed in the playoffs, which is insurmountable at this point. It's time to look to next season and hope their young players improve.
